Publisher's summary
Gerald Dickens, great, great grandson of Charles Dickens, reads this traditional Christmas tale, in which Ebenezer Scrooge is taught the true meaning of Christmas by a series of ghostly visitors.
Published in 1843, A Christmas Carol has become as much a part of Christmas as trees and stockings, plum pudding and mistletoe, enjoyed by children and adults alike.
This audiobook includes a special feature, as family member Gerald Dickens recounts his understanding of this classic story.

Story
The holidays are upon us, and this year Audible is very happy to present to our members one of Charles Dickens’ most popular Christmas stories, The Cricket on the Hearth. This holiday classic (original subtitle: “A Fairy Tale of Home”) tells the innocent, picturesque, and charming story of a poor family and their would-be guardian angel; in short, a delightful vision of Victorian Christmas. As always, a great story calls for a great voice, so we’ve brought in legendary actor and record-breaking Audie and Grammy award-winning narrator Jim Dale ( The Night Circus). Happy holidays and happy listening!

A member of the landed gentry, with a seemingly guaranteed income from his estate in the country, Oblomov lives in Petersburg, uninterested in the business that provides his living and barely aware that the revenue is diminishing. Not that he leads a dissolute life of extravagance, balls and entertainment. Instead he is a dreamer, a sybarite, content above all to spend most of the day supine, in bed. The novel opens with Oblomov thus ensconced, attended only by his dirty, grumbling, indolent servant Zahar, who has looked after him since childhood, catering to his every need.

Story
Adam Bede (1859), George Eliot's first full-length novel, marked the emergence of an artist to rank with Scott and Dickens. Set in the English Midlands of farmers and village craftsmen at the turn of the 18th century, the book relates a story of seduction issuing in "the inward suffering which is the worst form of Nemesis". But it is also a rich and pioneering record - drawing on intimate knowledge and affectionate memory - of a rural world that we have lost.

Story
Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, (1860-1904), was born in Russia at Taganrog on the Sea of Azov. His name has become synonymous with a certain literary style much admired and widely copied since his death. Typically, a Chekhov story is a "mood", a state of mind, usually with regard to relations between one person and another. Under the influence of the constant, infinitesimal, and unforeseen pinpricks of life, there occurs a gradual transformation of that state of mind.

Best narrator anywhere!
Gerald Dickens is a great voice for his great grandad's books....he varies his speech to suit the characters, he enunciates properly, and he makes the stories live. I have bought all of his narrated books...I love them!
I listened to this one straight through while at the gym. I may listen to it again.

one of the best versions of the best book
i loved this narration of a christmas carol. voices, timing, inflection all top notch. i do wish there was more family history and personal reflection by the narrator as that was a major reason i downloaded this title. while he does offer some intetesting information, i admit i wanted even more. even without the added bonus at the end this audiobook version is a superior one and i will deffinetly listen to it again

Wonderful version of the timeless classic
I'm sure the fact that this beloved story was read by a descendant of the great Charles Dickens added to the wonder of this recording. Gerald Dickens does a remarkable job narrating a story that needs no introduction. Of all the versions I have heard, and there are many, this ranks extremely high. One truly feels as though Charles Dickens himself is giving one of the many public readings of "A Christmas Carol," something he did often. I highly recommend this audio book.
