Publisher's summary

In COMPASS FOR TRAILBLAZERS: For Solidarity of Nations, Kibbutz Socialism, and Zionism, Yaniv Sagee provides an in-depth study that calls for social change and a reexamination of the “Hashomer Hatzair” values, based on the reality of the third decade of the 21st century. COMPASS FOR TRAILBLAZERS calls for a discussion on the future shared life between the two nations living in Israel, between the nations of the Middle East, and the world. COMPASS FOR TRAILBLAZERS calls for renewed conversation regarding the essence of Zionism, and is particularly addressed to the left-wing in Israel, as well as diaspora Jews. COMPASS FOR TRAILBLAZERS calls for a necessary discussion on Socialism and the kibbutz, and in the hopes of ensuring the sustainability of the kibbutz in the coming generations. The three core domains of discussion [For Solidarity of Nations, Kibbutz Socialism, and Zionism] are linked to each other and contain a clear call for social change in Israel, in the middle east, and in the world.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

For the past 35 years, Yaniv Sagee has held leadership and management positions in Kibbutz “Ein Hashofet,” where he grew up and was educated, and where still he lives today; in the Hashomer Hatzair movement, in Israel and worldwide; at Givat Haviva; in the Meretz political party; and in Israel’s public service system. Sagee’s activity focuses on the field of education and the advancement of frameworks to create partnerships between Jews and Arabs, Israelis, and Palestinians.

“This is a unique book, rich in content, significant, and out of the ordinary in the landscape of materials being written during these difficult times; times in which there is greater confusion than clarity, and universal human values are being trampled. Sagee’s call to action in this book heightens the feeling and the recognition that humanity is neglected and abandoned to its fate when it worships the “religion” of maximizing profits and held captive to the bondage of money, which has long ago become detached from the needs of human sustainability, and from the existential demands of the sphere on which we incidentally, and temporarily live.” — Yehoshua Sobol
