About this listen

The initials stand for Rossum's Universal Robots. This Czech play, first produced in 1921, introduced the word "robot" into the world lexicon. The Rossum factory robots are so human that a well-meaning beauty travels to R.U.R.'s island headquarters to liberate them. She ends up fomenting more revolution than the human race can handle. With a cast featuring Alan Bergmann, John Birney, Brian Finney, Milton James, Laua Kellogg, Ann Marie Lee, Lorna Raver, Stefan Rudnicki, John Schuck, and Kristoffer Tabori.

Hosted by award-winning writer and broadcast personality Harlan Ellison.

Robot #1

Before this play, the word, “robot,” did not exist. ‘Nuff said. Ask your A.I. to play it for you.

Surprisingly Modern...

This story might not seem incredibly original, but the fact is that those other stories are just repeats of this, the first story about Robots.

The dialogue is a little overwrought in a few places, which is the only thing that keeps this from getting five stars. The performers do a good job with it, though.

It's truly surprising how well the story holds up after all this time.
