代表作は『D坂の殺人事件』『陰獣』『孤島の鬼』『怪人二十面相』他。
1894年(明治27年) 三重県名賀郡名張町(現・名張市)生。本名は平井太郎。
早稲田大学政治経済学部卒業後、貿易会社社員、古本屋、支那ソバ屋などを転々とする。
1917年(大正6年) 鳥羽造船所電機部に就職。1年4ヶ月で退職するが『屋根裏の散歩者』や『パノラマ島奇談』の参考になったという。
その後、岩井三郎探偵事務所などを、また転々とする。
1923年(大正12年)『新青年』掲載「二銭銅貨」で作家デビュー。
1965年(昭和40年)7月28日 没。
