彦太郎は、勤め先の木綿問屋を解雇されて親元に帰って来た。五十を超えた父の厄介になりながら生活するのは、心苦しくもあったが、自分の患っている病――夢遊病のせいで、住み込みの勤めを新たに探すのは難しかった。
彦太郎は父に夢遊病のことを言い出せずにおり、せっかく見つけてきた勤め口を理由もなく断るため、父との関係もどんどん悪化していった。
ある日、父子の口論から激しい取っ組み合いの喧嘩になった。それすらも珍しいことでは無かったのだが、突っ伏して泣いたままの姿勢で寝入った彦太郎は、目が覚めて、籐椅子にもたれたまま死んでいる父の姿を目の当たりにするのだった……

日本の推理小説家。1894年10月21日生まれ、三重県生まれ。筆名は、19世紀の米国の小説家エドガー・アラン・ポーに由来する。数々の職業遍歴を経て作家デビューを果たす。本格的な推理小説と並行して『怪人二十面相』、『少年探偵団』などの少年向けの推理小説なども多数手がける。代表作は『人間椅子』、『黒蜥蜴』、『陰獣』など。1954年には乱歩の寄付を基金として、後進の推理小説作家育成のための「江戸川乱歩賞」が創設された。
