Story
We already rely on science to tell us what to eat, when to exercise, and how long to sleep. Why not use science to help us improve our relationships? In this revolutionary book, psychiatrist and neuroscientist Dr. Amir Levine and Rachel Heller scientifically explain why some people seem to navigate relationships effortlessly, while others struggle.

Utter garbage, decently read aloud

This book is deeply slanted to the idea that anxious attached people are the only right way, and just need the whole world to hold their hand (and we are all abusive for not doing it at every turn.) Very little objective information, no direction on how to improve ourselves, just advice on how we can all do a better job of soothing anxious people since apparently that’s our constant job in this world.

Story
Identity. It’s an abstract term. But it starts with realizing where you came from, in order to know where you should be going. And that’s the difference between fulfillment and going through the motions day after day. Find clarity and direction, the true foundations of happiness. How to Find Yourself provides a thorough and scientific approach to understanding yourself and why you do the things you do. You will discover your values, the roots of your behaviors, and what makes you tick. And then you can use this information to your advantage.

I only made it a couple chapters into this book and couldn’t take it anymore. I could get past the narrators droning if the content was great - but the advice was ridiculous. First chapter they tell you to name all your values, and that will reveal your true identity. It says “make sure you have stripped away what you may have been told to value, and just focus on what you really believe.” Okay, that’s somewhat solid, I don’t have time to go into how circular that is. But then the very next chapter they tell you to act in opposition to your true nature, and somehow that’s what’s best for you. So… find it and then reject it? Also, they subtly suggest what you should value over and over throughout the chapters, while also telling you to decide for yourself. The over arching theme of the author seems to be that you should value relational connections above all else. That could make others feel shame for it not being their top priority. Some people are driven for great achievements, or more solitude, academia, nature…. They bring DEEP value to the world, and it comes at the sacrifice of being a “family guy”.
Bottom line: it was not objective, the advice was all over the place, and the narrator made my head hurt.
First time I’ve ever written a negative review for a book - but I had to try to save someone else from wasting an Audible credit.
