Story
Johannesburg, 1980s Apartheid South Africa. Augustine flees her vengeful ex-boyfriend with nothing but her child and the clothes on her back, terrified he will find her. Because she also possesses a dangerous secret. One he will kill for. One he will never stop hunting her for. But Augustine is rescued by a wealthy white housewife who takes pity on her, offering both employment and refuge. Or so she thinks. It might seem that she is safe inside the walls of the prosperous Diamond family home, but outside her every move is watched. Her sanctuary has become her prison.

Not what I expected in the end!
Reviewed: 04-25-25
I like the beginning and the end was unexpected in a great way. The middle had me taking several breaks to understand what I was listening to before I got totally lost. Could have been the monotone. But needed for the story line.

I liked the main character’s perspectives. It gave me a deeper non-judgmental understanding. This is why I love to read/listen to Picoults books. The end was The Best! And made it all worth while. This is one to read and to pass on to others! (With a tissue for the end)

Another have to keep listening book, don’t bother me now cats-totally joking. McFadden is one of my favorite authors. She continuously takes you on a ride on this one and it makes you wanting more! Then she slams the brakes on the epilogue and it’s quiet because you want to hear what’s being said and your goosebumps are growing till the end of the book. And you’re left saying to yourself Damn!!! Oh highly recommend this one!!!

At first I didn’t know where this was going, then it started to build and that it did. Right to the end, literally the end of the book, without warning on what’s going on. Love books like this.

I’ve enjoyed the Willingby Close Series. This is another aspect of the close knit community that you wish was in your neighborhood. This book in particular focused mainly on the two characters and less on their surroundings compared to the other ones which made this feel shorter. I’m looking for my next one I didn’t read in the series!

The words would be jarring from anyone, but the sender is the only man she ever loved. And it's been several years since she learned he died. Seeing Drew’s name pop up is heart-stopping. Ariel’s gut says it can’t be real. But she goes to the tree anyway. She has to. Nobody shows.

I was drawn in quick. It’s like a roller coaster of events of storylines. There were times where I could think of what was coming next which I was not right. But it was fun. Unfortunately it’s over.

Former Broadway dancer and current agoraphobic Billy Shine has not set foot outside his apartment in almost a decade. He has glimpsed his neighbors--beautiful manicurist Rayleen, lonely old Ms. Hinman, bigoted and angry Mr. Lafferty, kind-hearted Felipe, and nine-year-old Grace and her former addict mother, Eileen. But most of them have never seen Billy. Not until Grace begins to sit outside on the building's front stoop for hours every day, inches from Billy's patio.

This book tells a compelling story of a little boy that found by chance who needed a second chance in life. A determined person to give him that new world he so desperately needed. And a family who guided him towards his living his next stage of his life. There’s twist in the book. There’s emotions, so have tissues handy. Love is powerful! I do suggest this to others.
