Story
I had a great time during my chaotic first year at the academy, where I learned about my demonic powers and made a few gorgeous friends. My sophomore year is starting early, introducing me to new classes and new girls, including a quiet tomboy named Andie and an obsessive redhead named Emma. The girls aren’t the only ones on my radar though. News of an ancient demonic artifact surfaces for the first time in generations, and somehow, it’s linked to me. It’s going to take every connection I have to find it, and it just might lead to something that can destroy the entire Nine Circles.

The MC is an idiot. The romance is pretty bad. Banter isn’t really that funny. Using rage to enhance his abilities just feels lazy.

Story
Arthur lives with his father, a fallen but proud former noble, in Border Village #49, along with the other good folks condemned to toil in service to the Baron. But Arthur has an edge: a stolen heart card that secretly fell into his possession, thanks to a dragon. It’s a priceless source of power for the Baron and the tyrant will kill to get it back. Invaluable, too, to a young man of spellcasting ambitions.

Narrator’s did a great job with the regular narration, but I didn’t like his voices. Can’t really blame him for the female voices, but his choices and consistency for the others really bothered me. Especially the voices for the dragons. I’m probably just being picky but I expected more thanks to all of the reviews praising him as one of the best. Still going to read the rest though since the story is great.

Horrible dialogue
Reviewed: 08-05-24
I’ve only made it 5 hours in and I can’t take the dialogue between the characters any longer. The lines sound like they were written by a middle schooler. The way the male narrator delivers them certainly doesn’t help. I lost count of how many times I rolled my eyes or cringed at the MC alone. The female narrator is a little better, but she still seems a little disinterested in the story. Maybe try giving it a read instead of listening, but by no means should you spend money on either the book or audiobook.

Great story. A little short compared to what I normally listen to but I gave it a shot because of Travis Baldree. Was not disappointed. I liked the multiple POV and I’m surprised at how much I enjoyed the flashbacks. Especially since I was constantly hoping for a “present time” chapter. Really enjoyed this author’s ability to make me laugh and also shed a few tears. I would definitely recommend. Can’t wait for the next one!

Story
Dave Smith is having a bad day, week, month, maybe even year. Freshly unemployed, facing eviction, and now he's been transported to a fantasy world. A wish come true for many a geek, if only he hadn't died less than a day after he arrived. Now trapped in this fantasy realms version of purgatory, he faces the prospect of trying to navigate a new existence as a dungeon. That wouldn't be so bad, except ending dungeons seems to be the path out for many of the other denizens of these Proving Grounds.

Not really worth it.

I’m surprised so many people were happy with the narration. Male narrator was pretty hard to listen to and the female narrator barely had any lines. He had a really awkward flow that sped up and slowed down at weird moments and he chose to emphasize words that the book did not. But I may be biased since this is the second book I’ve regretted buying with him as the narrator.
The concept of the story was pretty interesting but I couldn’t really enjoy it with the uncomfortable rapey vibe throughout the book.
Spoilers ahead
The MC basically tells a woman to have sex with him or die. But don’t worry, the author has her get aroused during the fight with the MC and uses the fact that they won’t truly die once they are killed to try and lead us to believe she wants to have sex too and is just too prideful to say it. He asks her multiple times to just say the word and he can tear her throat out instead. The whole thing is ridiculous. In a different interaction with a female, the MC has to be restrained so he doesn’t force himself on her, but it’s ok because she definitely “wants to be caught.” By the end of the book, the MC has totally bought in to the whole “take what is mine” alpha male mindset that just makes you cringe listening to it. He easily adjusts his moral compass to fit his new surroundings and embraces becoming the wolf king sex dungeon. The whole reason he becomes a sex dungeon is because his soul is scanned and it reveals that he thought about sex constantly during his life before he died and was transported. Throughout the book he thinks that the wolf inside of him was changing him and loosening his morals, but by the end he accepts that he had that “wolf” inside of him all along. Basically, he has always thought like a rapist and the only thing stopping him from acting on his thoughts were the consequences.
I would not recommend this book but if you want to give it a shot then read it instead.
