Story
Among the men and women prominent in the public life of early 20th-century America there are but few whose names are mentioned as often as that of Emma Goldman. Yet the real Emma Goldman is almost quite unknown. Here are powerful, penetrating, prophetic essays on direct action, the role of minorities, prison reform, puritan hypocrisy, and violence.

Preaching to the choir
Reviewed: 12-24-24
I was expecting (and hoping) for something more dry and explanatory. This feels like prose poetry. It is very well written, and interesting, but it gives the energy of preaching to the choir.
I wasn't expecting to be converted to anarchism, but I don't even feel like I have a deeper understanding of anarchist philosophy. Not that the essays are not deep and complex, but that they have already been condensed and spread for so many years that it no longer feels radical or profound, which it may well have been at the time it was written.
I recommend this book as an interesting historical text, or well written prose poetry, but not to learn anarchist philosophy unless one knows nothing about it already.
I am disappointed in the tirade against the "vulgar masses" not having any taste in art or appreciation of anything of moral beauty. The critic of monetary value not being the same as artistic quality is valid, condemning the mob for following trends may be worthwhile argument in a context, but degrading popular art for being popular feels very conceited.
I do enjoy the savage lampooning of the police.
"Every society has the criminals it deserves"
Ahead of her time example of second-wave feminism, explained well.

Opening with the distinction between a theological and a historical review of Christianity should probably not need saying, but I still appreciate the tactful and thorough explanation Bart Ehrman gives.
I am surprised how many things I took for granted that Ehrman makes me now question.

Herodotus is not only the father of the art and the science of historical writing, but also one of the Western tradition's most compelling storytellers. In tales such as that of Gyges, who murders Candaules, the king of Lydia, and usurps his throne and his marriage bed, thereby bringing on, generations later, war with the Persians, Herodotus laid bare the intricate human entanglements at the core of great historical events.

Ye olde sounding recording
Reviewed: 11-21-24
Bernard Mayes sounds like he is old enough to have witnessed Herodotus himself. It is actually quite endearing but can be jarring if you aren't expecting it. Very sibilant, normally fine but the microphone seams to exaggerate it.
This is my second start-to-finish listen, but I just finished an audiobook about The Histories, which gives a lot of context and interesting tid bits I would have missed otherwise. Unsure when translation was done but many archaic terms that are not greek, such as using kine for cows and furlongs for stadia. These and other archaisms make some part's unnecessarily hard to understand.
Overall I thoroughly enjoyed listening.

Witness the "works and wonders" of the ancient world through the eyes of its first great historian in this sparkling series of 24 lectures from a much-honored teacher and classical scholar.Herodotus (c. 484-420 B.C.E.) was a Greek who was born in what is now the modern Turkish resort town of Bodrum and who died, so tradition says, in the south of Italy. In between, his tirelessly inquiring mind took him from one corner of the known world to another.

One of the main advantages of this into is having all this info at once, it helps take a more nuanced picture. Regardless of one's views about the belligerents in the conflict, Britain did more harm than good while having the best cost/benefit outcome for themselves.

Hegel is regarded as one of the most influential figures on modern political and intellectual development. After painting Hegel's life and times in broad strokes, Peter Singer goes on to tackle some of the more challenging aspects of Hegel's philosophy. Offering a broad discussion of Hegel's ideas and an account of his major works, Singer explains what have often been considered abstruse and obscure ideas in a clear and inviting manner.

A toe-dip into an ocean of philosophical discourse
Reviewed: 10-30-24
I appreciate the narrowing of scope to only some of his many works in specific fields of interest. The euro-centric orientalism is very uncomfortable, as thought-experiment the concepts are interesting but not by sweeping most of the "Orient" as people with no real free-will. Hegel's views were common at the time and there is no reasonable way for him to know better, but it is still disquieting.
I predominantly hear post-modern philosophy, so a lot of Hegel's ideas feel antiquated however they are still deeply thought out and well laid out.
DIALECTICS! His most overtly lasting contribution. I would have liked more time on dialectics, but this short intro meant to be general.

Worst reader I have ever heard on Audible; increasing the speed helps but doesn't take out the robotic sound. However, the content is quite good, the wide coverage of the history and changes to Human Rights is interesting. I especially appreciated the bit about modern political arguments against "excessive" human rights -- protecting migrants and refugees, rights to food and water, etc.
