Story
Cyril Avery is not a real Avery - or at least that's what his adoptive parents tell him. And he never will be. But if he isn't a real Avery, then who is he? Born out of wedlock to a teenage girl cast out from her rural Irish community and adopted by a well-to-do if eccentric Dublin couple via the intervention of a hunchbacked Redemptorist nun, Cyril is adrift in the world, anchored only tenuously by his heartfelt friendship with the infinitely more glamourous and dangerous Julian Woodbead.

A feel good cheesy listen. Pretty relaxing. Very predictable. The narration seems to be delivered with a smirk sometimes. I’m listening to the whole series no less. The best part: it’s clean!

I am disappointed that this is not a freebie or ‘included’ book. It feels like a wasted credit as I struggled with the narration. The pace of the reading was illogical. At times I felt like I was at the library story hour! It definitely detracts from an alright story and good writing.

Story
Growing up Amish and leaving the fold, Emma Gingerich left her Amish community in Eagleville, Missouri, at the age of 18. Her memoir Runaway Amish Girl: The Great Escape captivates even the timid listener. Disagreeing with the beliefs of Amish traditions and upbringing, the pressure became too much for her to bear. Forced to make a personal decision, Emma found the courage to leave the only life she had ever known. She had no idea the emotional turmoil she'd inflict on her family and friends.

The story is legit. As an ex- Amish I can be hypercritical of these stories. There was much negative she could have said but did not.
The reader is obviously clueless on German pronunciations but it gave me laughs rather than effecting the story.

Interesting stories, but of course the medical stuff is a bit dated. It’s not bad if you can stand some swearing, although it isn’t excessive. Best all NO sex antics or descriptions. The on call rooms and closets contain sleeping over worked hero’s and clean linens only. Refreshing.

The content is clean, so swearing or sex. I appreciate that. The writing is good, the topic a bit macabre lurid for me, yet it was handled well. I so appreciate books that show the author’s talents instead highlighting the characters sex life.
