The back & forth between two men gets unnerving
Reviewed: 09-10-23
I'm about halfway in at this point. There were parts in the book where I was at the point of returning the book because it was irritating me so much.
We have a situation where two different men are not exactly a great fit as a long term partner but who provide excellent sexual experiences. She bounces back and forth between them for about 2 years. I personally cut ties and completely cut contact with a former partner so her approach of staying friends and eventually F**k buddies is an unfamiliar concept to me. Clearly her approach to stay in touch as closely as she did, in the long run only limited her from the healing she desperately needed.
At this point I want to fast forward thru any discussion about Javier because in the previous chapter she agreed with him to not have contact. Yet here we go again. O M G
Make it stop!!!
I'm looking forward to the travel part of this book but the way things are going, I might drop out before that point.
I am aware which man she eventually IRL marries and recently had a child with. So the outcome is kinda known already.
overall performance wise: I had to get used to her manner of speaking with her first book. it's like a casual story telling based on actual events. The reading out of text messages back and forth makes it a but odd imo

Story
A year and a half into our marriage, I found out my husband had been having an affair with a 19-year-old for six months. I filed for divorce and left. Two weeks later I met a man, and we fell madly in love. It was a fairy-tale romance for a month and a half, and he convinced me to join him on a romantic month-long vacation in Italy. Forty-eight hours before we were supposed to get on a plane, he told me he needed to go by himself. I was devastated. So, I had a decision to make. Either stay home and be heartbroken, or go travel Europe for a month by myself.

Once I got into the story, I was hooked
Reviewed: 08-27-23
I would say that the writing style of Gabrielle is definitely very casual. She also frequently uses cuss words. If that is not your style, then this is not the book for you.
I enjoyed the self analysis parts, peeling back the onion.
I'm about to start part 2 because I am definitely hooked on the story and curious where it all leads to.

love the message but narration sounds like lecture
Reviewed: 07-23-23
I have been listening for a few chapters now and I indeed do enjoy the overall message. As a trauma survivor myself there were some parts that were a bit triggering for me.
The narration is quite annoying. I noticed another book with similar issue: too intense and sounds like. strict lecture. A more soothing voice would be more appropriate.

too repetitive each chapter
Reviewed: 04-14-22
the narrator is fine
after some 5 chapters I started to get annoyed by yet the exact same structure.
1. a patient with a severe illness such as cancer has similar emotional issues
2. mostly repressing their emotions for the sake of others
there was only some advice in the 19th chapter. I quit after 9 chapters and returned it.
how is this book so highly recommended? it's a repeating same story over and over without much solution or advice. the overall message is basically that the way you handle or ignore emotions, can lead to deathly disease smh

Story
There's a lot you probably don't know about the Buddha. For one, the real Buddha was thin. And before he became the "Enlightened One", he was a pampered prince named Siddhartha. He tried starving himself in his quest for inner peace, but found that extremes brought him no closer to enlightenment. Instead, he sought a "middle way" between unhealthy overindulgence and unrealistic abstinence. The instructions he gave his monks about eating, more than 2,500 years ago, were surprisingly simple.
