One of my best listens started in 2023, although I knew to expect greatness from Jojo Moyes as I’d listened to her other novels. A very suspenseful & unexpected turn of events involving an unlikely group of strangers that grabbed my attention from the first few moments. Would love to see this made into a movie!

A great intergenerational and historical novel.

One of my favorite hobbies is sewing, which was passed down to me by my mother and grandmothers. I already knew I would enjoy this story and learning about the lives of the characters. One aspect about the performance I struggled with was how rapidly the narration went. I could barely keep up and it was only when I went into the settings and slowed down the speed (quite a bit!) that I was finally able to sit back and enjoy this book. Overall, I really liked this story.

Story
In 1945, Claire Randall, a former combat nurse, is back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon. Their blissful reunion is shattered when she touches a boulder in one of the ancient stone ruins and is instantly transported to a Scotland torn by war and raiding border clans—in 1743. Will Claire find her way back to her own time, or is her destiny forever linked with Clan MacKenzie and the gallant James Fraser?

Really good until last six hours or so...

A very intriguing and creative story with the time travel and history. I loved the pluckiness Claire possessed as she moved through each new adventure. Ms. Gabaldon clearly did an abundance of research for this novel. I don’t think there could have been a narrator better suited for this story than Davina Porter. Alas, the story becomes almost impossible to continue when Jamie is taken captive and lodged in Wentworth prison and James Randle comes to “visit” him. The gratuitous and unending renditions of excruciatingly detailed physical, mental, and sexual torture is beyond sickening. It really put a black shadow over the overall book for me to the point that I just decided to ride it out (never a good sign with an audiobook) to see if it could redeem itself and/ or I could at least console myself by knowing I finished it. I wanted so badly to fall in love with this popular series, but it’s just not for me.

Why we think it’s a great listen: An all-time Audible favorite that mixes historic fiction, adventure, and romance with one of the most fascinating literary devices: time travel. Outlander introduces an exhilarating world of heroism and breathtaking thrills as one woman is torn between past and present, passion and love. In 1945, former combat nurse Claire Randall returns from World War II and joins her husband for a second honeymoon. But their blissful reunion is shattered....

Conflicted over this book...
Reviewed: 05-26-20
I think Audible should have a new book subcategory called “trauma porn.” This book started off great, then entered the realm of gratuitous suffering and sadism. For some bizarre reason a puppy was doomed to suffer & die, which I found sickening. Oddly enough, I really super enjoyed the ending. The value of a savvy friend or acquaintance that knows to ask questions when things seem too good to be true cannot be overestimated.

Story
The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.
