Belfast, 1980, is the apocalypse. Bombings, riots, army on the streets, low flying helicopters, and ever-present rain. The grinding Northern Irish civil war between Protestants and Catholics has been going for a decade now. Hated by both sides are the police. Sean Duffy Year 1 takes us into that world. Newly promoted Detective Sergeant Sean Duffy is given his first command at Carrickfergus CID.

Oh I loved this. Anything I can get of Duffy and Crabby is a delight. McKinty’s writing is fantastic. The way he can turn a phrase is amazing. Seeing how this team began adds a lot to the series.
Of course, Gerard Doyle’s narration is the best.
Only thing wrong is the book is too short. But thanks to Adrian for giving us this little gem.

Story
Rain slicked streets, riots, murder, chaos. It’s July 1992 and the Troubles in Northern Ireland are still grinding on after twenty-five apocalyptic years. Detective Inspector Sean Duffy got his family safely over the water to Scotland, to “Shortbread Land”. Duffy’s a part-timer now, only returning to Belfast six days a month to get his pension. It’s an easy gig, if he can keep his head down.

I love Duffy and I’ve been waiting for this book for a long time. Thank you, Adrian!
(I love Michael Forsythe, too, and I was glad to hear him mentioned.)
A good story about The Troubles as they’re about to wind down. A part-time cop now, Duffy lives in Scotland with his common-law wife and their daughter except for 6 days a month back with the police. A murder in Carrick, with the full time head of CID on holiday, puts Duffy back in charge of an investigation.
If you’re new to the Sean Duffy series it’s important to start at the beginning of the series. It’s worth it.
Gerard Doyle does an exceptional job with the narration.

Very good book in this series. I like the characters and the stories. I was thinking Grimm would get together with Rebecca but I guess that wasn’t in the cards.

To celebrate a job well done, the entire team are treated to a party at beautiful Belsay Hall, a spectacular country estate on the outskirts of the city. But, when their dinner is interrupted by the untimely arrival of a dead body, they’re reminded that crime never sleeps – and nor do the secrets within the walls of Belsay.

A gruesome murder begins this book and Bone and his team have their work cut out for them solving it. The book is good and the narrator does a great job. It COULD be a standalone but I recommend reading them in order for the progression. Bone’s PTSD is a thread through the series.
