Story
The ice is coming. It was the last thing we expected, but the world is freezing. A new ice age has dawned. Billions have fled the glaciers. A cataclysmic war is coming. In orbit, a group of scientists are running the Winter Experiments, a last-ditch attempt to understand why the planet is cooling. None of the climate models they build make sense. But then they discover an anomaly, an unexplained variation in solar radiation...and something else. Close to the burning edge of the sun, they catch a fleeting glimpse of something that shouldn’t be there....

It has been a while since a book has shocked me & it did so quite surprisingly & expertly. The performance was fine but when the "robot" voices happened I found that irritating. The performances by the actors was fabulous. Really other than the robot voices I found this a short, sweet, surprising, fun & perfect read.

Nothing ever changes. Until now. As Harry nears the end of his 11th life, a little girl appears at his bedside. "I nearly missed you, Doctor August", she says. "I need to send a message". The reader wasn't my taste & the writing style (while it fit the period) was very dry. It was a complete package of meh quite frankly. Not very thrilling. Not particularly inventive thought the idea was good. It was the execution that wasn't great. Wouldn't read that author again. For sci-fi I myself prefer the "Bobiverse" or anything by Peter Cline (except Dead Moon).

Story
In December 2017 the famous porn star August Ames committed suicide in a park in the Conejo Valley. It happened a day after she’d been the victim of a pile-on, via Twitter, by fellow porn professionals - punishment for her tweeting something deemed homophobic. A month later, August’s husband, Kevin, connected with Jon Ronson to tell the story of how Twitter bullying killed his wife. What neither Kevin nor Ronson realized was that Ronson would soon hear rumors and secrets hinting at a very different story - something mysterious and unexpected and terrible.

I got this story free & it was worth what I paid. But the narration was fantastically creepy & I loved the special effects. The story was just boring but to be fair I love horror but tend to hate supernatural/fake stuff. Good horror can get by with me though. This...meh. I had to write a review though because the narrator was top notch & he took a boring story & merely with his voice made me sit on the edge of my seat.

Dennis Taylor + Ray Porter= perfection. I zipped through the bobiverse books twice & now I bought this book & discovered to my surprise & delight its just as wonderful as the bobiverse books. I love the rhythm of Porter's voice & how he brings dimension & depth to characters Taylor has breathed into life. Porter is my fave reader & Taylor (who came out of nowhere) is in my top 3 of all time favorite writers now. I cannot ever imagine tiring of these two together. If you love science do not hesitate to buy this book & the bobiverse series.

Story
An 11-year-old boy's violated corpse is found in a town park. Eyewitnesses and fingerprints point unmistakably to one of Flint City's most popular citizens. He is Terry Maitland, Little League coach, English teacher, husband, and father of two girls. Detective Ralph Anderson, whose son Maitland once coached, orders a quick and very public arrest. Maitland has an alibi, but Anderson and the district attorney soon add DNA evidence to go with the fingerprints and witnesses. Their case seems ironclad.

I listen while I key at work & not only am I exclaiming out loud (not so atypical for me if the book is good) but today I told my co-worker she would have to put my kindle in the freezer for me. If you ever watched "Friends" the TV show you'll get this. Will Patton is quickly becoming my favorite reader. So far this book is engrossing & it's like crack to me so even though I'm not close to finishing I have to highly recommend. Stephen King + Will Patton = winner winner.

Story
Astronomer and TV science guy Gevin Rees just landed the interview of a lifetime with the world's most famous physicist. Remarkable, because the eccentric genius is notoriously reclusive, and he's already dead. What happens next forces Rees to run for his life from not one but two deadly assassins and global powers desperate to bury what he's just uncovered. Mind-blowing technology and solid evidence that would rewrite religious history and challenge the faith of billions.

What would have made The Kafir Project better?
I think the major problem was that the author had a destination for the story which IMO is a mistake. You need rich characters, put them in a situation & let the story unfold for you. If you're fascinated as an author it may find an audience. This story seemed to be backwards. Here's where I want to drive it & now I'll find a way to get there. The story seemed to want to teach a lesson rather than just be entertaining. I have to confess I almost didn't finish it. I couldn't tell you any of the names of the characters or even how it ended (and I did finish it). It was so disappointing I went back & read a few Peter Clive novels afterwards to wash away the bitter feeling. I had to force myself to finish it. The last time I forced myself to finish a fiction novel was about 35 years ago when I was reading Battlefield Earth. That book almost killed me it was so bad. At least it kept me from being sucked into Scientology. Someone wanted to do some Dianetics work with me & I thought it sounded cool but when I realized the same jerk-off who wrote Dianetics wrote that pieces of crap Battlefield Earth I ducked out. This book is NOT that bad (no book is). I've just read so many fantastic books as of late that this one just hit a sour note for me. It's not memorable. The characters are bland as milk toast & add in the reader & it is just a boring mess.
Would you ever listen to anything by Lee Burvine again?
Probably not.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Seth Andrews?
I am a huge fan of Seth Andrews. I don't say this lightly, he shouldn't be reading fiction. He has a great radio voice but that doesn't translate to being a good actor or reader. The presentation of the material hurt the story which wasn't great to begin with. I wouldn't recommend anyone I like because the book is so boring.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Boredom. I almost didn't finish it. Able to time view? Sounds awesome. Forward by Krauss??? Can't possibly be bad. Dissing religion? Sign me up. Perhaps my hopes were too high.
Any additional comments?
Meh.
