the writing style is a little weird here and while j did enjoy the political drama of it all tagarets narrator was awful!
unnecessary pauses and dips in volume. he would speak normally then whisper super soft then explode with energy. I dont have the best hearing so the constant whispering was a definite thumbs down. I think I'll read the book in the future

In 1872, New Orleans is a city ruled by the dead. But to 17-year-old Celine Rousseau, New Orleans is a safe haven after she's forced to flee her life as a dressmaker in Paris. Taken in by the sisters of the Ursuline convent in the middle of the carnival season, Celine is quickly enraptured by the vibrant city, from its music to its fancy soirées and even its danger. She becomes embroiled in the city's glitzy underworld, known as La Cour des Lions, after catching the eye of the group's enigmatic leader, Sébastien Saint Germain.

while I had no true issue with the story I loathed the direction the narrator took with this book. the accents are greatly exaggerated and bad. and she made her voice horribly scratchy and dry it was awful. also the villan monologue chapters were spoken so slowly I had to turn the speed to 1.7 almost just to understand what she was saying. I dont understand nor do I care to investigate . will not be listening to this narrator any time soon.

Story
When Silla and Nori arrive at their aunt's home, it's immediately clear that the "blood manor" is cursed. The creaking of the house and the stillness of the woods surrounding them would be enough of a sign, but there are secrets, too - the questions that Silla can't ignore: Who is the beautiful boy who's appeared from the woods? Who is the man her little sister sees, but no one else? And why does it seem that ever since they arrived, the trees have been creeping closer?
