Publisher's summary

In the captivating start to a new, darkly lyrical fantasy series, Tea can raise the dead, but resurrection comes at a price.

When Tea accidentally resurrects her brother from the dead, she learns she is different from the other witches in her family. Her gift for necromancy means that she's a bone witch, a title that makes her feared and ostracized by her community. But Tea finds solace and guidance with an older, wiser bone witch, who takes Tea and her brother to another land for training.

In her new home, Tea puts all her energy into becoming an asha - one who can wield elemental magic. But dark forces are approaching quickly, and in the face of danger, Tea will have to overcome her obstacles and make a powerful choice.

*whisper* It was okay *mumble mumble*

first audiobook I've ever skipped chapters because it had become so boring and intolerable. I stuck around because I like the parts of the world and some characters. they had a couple very good highlights and a couple very bad sections. also a constant problem of extremely varying volumes. The female narrator loves to whisper and mumble so quietly you cannot hear anything even though just seconds ago they were talking so loudly that even without yelling your ears hurt. And if you dare turn that volume up they will immediately yell again using a shrill voice without warning for one of the most unlikable characters at least that much is fitting. lots of made of magic mumbo jumbo and a lot of it is just there to be there. replacing the words honor and dignity with fake words just so you could say those fake words four times in a row making you forget which is which and then never mentioning it again. it makes what this book could be ,and in this world may hold be muddied.

Love the book, not the volume control

The book kept me enthralled… The story was rich and full, but the narrator was so quiet half the time that I couldn’t hear.

Beautifully Complex

This book truly brings the world inside of it to life. The emotion and all the complexities of the life of a bone witch are brought forth in a way you can easily follow while sacrificing none of its world building or your emotional attachment to what's happening. Truely a beautiful peice of literature.

Story isn’t bad

Really well ah they had just let the female actor perform the novel. It’s too distracting, and pulled me out of the story every time.

A good beginning

There was a lot to like about the Bone Witch. I enjoyed the main characters and their connection to each other. However, the overall story could have been woven better.

Pleasantly surprised

I started this book because I wanted to support minority women authors. I had no expectations which made this all the more enjoyable. The growth of the character was the right pace and the twists were well woven into the overarching story.

Compelling story, good narrator

The book is really well written, with a beautiful language. The story is compelling, although it suffered a bit in the middle of the book, were it seemed that too little happened. It is told in two different timelines, and present Tea, the one telling her own story, is more interesting than past Tea. The end of the book opened a lot of opportunities to further explore, and I'm eager to dive into book two. The narration of the audio book also added to the experience. I started this book on my kindle, but found it easier to follow once I switched to the audio version.

Good

like the book but hard to follow around it jumps all over and just listening to it makes it hard to tell if its present for backstory.

Hard to focus

Hard to focus with the constant switch of narrators. It’s a first person narration btw

14/10

it was so well written I listened to it in 2 days. I usually am not a fantasy fan but this one is so good I can't wait to start book 2. I love the premise and the setting, as well as the lgbt+ representation.
