An absolutely awesome listen. The writing was on point. I did not see the end coming and even though I would have loved more, I simply did not want it to end. Good stuff.

Story
In 1961, at the height of the Cold War, the United States severed diplomatic relations with Cuba, where a momentous revolution had taken power three years earlier. For more than half a century, the stand-off continued—through the tenure of ten American presidents and the fifty-year rule of Fidel Castro. His death in 2016, and the retirement of his brother and successor Raúl Castro in 2021, have spurred questions about the country’s future. Spanning more than five centuries, Cuba provides us with a front-row seat as we witness the evolution of the modern nation.

SPEECHLESS
Reviewed: 03-18-22
I was born on an island 90 mi from Cuba and have been on this earth over 5 decades now. I am ashamed to say that I was ignorant of the struggle of my brothers and sisters in that land.
The writing of this book is simply genius genius, let’s just get that out of the way.
It was like reading a million individual biographies of both the land and the people. And wow…the details were just beyond words (see what I did there?).
As it got closer to President Castro, I knew it was rounding the bend and would me ending soon - a deep sadness came over me. By the epilogue, with the reference to Teodoro Ramos Blanco, someone was cutting onions so I had to take a pause and grab a tissue.
Yeah…it was a pretty emotional ride for me.
I suppose reflecting on the history of suffering and struggle of peoples (my peoples) of the Caribbean basin and Latin America that continues to this day, reading a book like this provides perspective; and when it is as well researched and beautifully written, as this is - that’s a bonus.
Thank you Ms Ferrer…thank you very very much.

Story
In this brilliant book, Isabel Wilkerson gives us a masterful portrait of an unseen phenomenon in America as she explores, through an immersive, deeply researched narrative and stories about real people, how America today and throughout its history has been shaped by a hidden caste system, a rigid hierarchy of human rankings. Beautifully written, original, and revealing, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents is an eye-opening story of people and history, and a reexamination of what lies under the surface of ordinary lives and of American life today.

The research is absolutely first rate.
For anyone who wants a proper and full understanding of the long, deep and painful price paid by blacks in this long American experiment, this is a must read. In fact, this should be added as required reading in all American high schools.

Honestly, hoped Homer was standing at the end.
Anyway, the writing was captivating. It was as though I was watching a moving. It was vivid, colorful, captivating and engrossing. I found myself at time biting my lips with rage, wanting to cast my own blow.
The locations are locations I am familiar with from my childhood, so that also added to my interest. I can't say it enough - I loved it!
I am now a big fan and can't wait to read the rest of Marlon James.
