The Walking Book Club® delves into themes of Healthy Body and Happy Mind, making it a natural choice to select Dr. Ellen Langer's latest audiobook for our group's listening and moving list. Dr. Langer, often referred to as the "mother of mindfulness," brings a wealth of experience and insight to her work, making her audiobook an engaging and enriching experience for our members. We were fortunate to dive deeper into the themes of her book during a lively Heart and Soul Book Chat, a recording of which is available on YouTube for those interested in exploring our discussions further.

In The Mindful Body: Thinking Our Way to Chronic Health, Dr. Langer combines autobiography with comprehensive overviews of her groundbreaking research and publications from her tenure as a respected Harvard professor. Her unique blend of personal narrative and academic exploration makes for a thought-provoking listen, prompting listeners to reconsider their chronic health and wellness perspectives.

During our exploration of audiobook extras, I encountered information surrounding the controversies on some of Dr. Langer's methods. Dr. Langer herself addressed potential future studies during our interview, expressing her interest in exploring the concept of "thinking yourself full and sated" regarding food and eating habits. As a board-certified health coach with decades of experience, I approached these ideas skeptically. Yet, I found Dr. Langer's insights to be both interesting and thought-provoking, adding layers of complexity to our discussions.

For anyone intrigued by the topic of mindfulness and its potential impact on chronic health, I wholeheartedly recommend The Mindful Body: Thinking Our Way to Chronic Health. The audiobook offers a worthy listening experience, complemented by respectable narration that enhances the accessibility and engagement of Dr. Langer's work in the field.

A Journey That Will Capture Your Heart
When it comes to non-fiction audiobooks that leave a lasting impact, Between The Mountain and the Sky by Maggie Doyne is always at the top of my list. Maggie's storytelling prowess shines through as she shares her incredible journey as a young traveler who found herself becoming a mother to orphaned Nepalese children. Her courage, vulnerability, and humility instantly draw you in, forging a deep connection between listener and storyteller.

One of the most inspiring aspects of Maggie's narrative is her wisdom on navigating loss, a theme that resonates profoundly with those who have experienced deep grief. Her words not only touch your soul but also infuse you with hope, reminding us that love transcends even the darkest moments. The audiobook is filled with unforgettable passages, including a poignant excerpt from The Walking Book Club®'s audiobook extras that beautifully encapsulates the essence of grief and love.
What sets Between The Mountain and the Sky apart is Maggie's exceptional narration. While some authors may struggle to convey their stories effectively in audio format, Maggie's delivery is flawless, earning a well-deserved five-star rating for the quality of her narration. The audiobook's adjustable playback speed further enhances the listening experience, allowing you to immerse yourself fully in Maggie's journey at your preferred pace.

After experiencing the audiobook, you can continue to follow Maggie's inspiring endeavors through her ongoing work with Blink Now and Koplia Valley Children’s Home and School, where she continues to share her experiences with the same authenticity and honesty that captivated listeners in her book. REVIEW: Not What Was Expected

Members enjoyed Women Talking by Miriam Toews, giving a 4.7 Sneaker Rating for the Overall Experience. The book is based on a true story of Mennonite women in Bolivia during the mid-2000s who reported waking up in bed with injuries as if from sexual assaults but with no memory of events. The colony’s men blamed demons and told others it was their “wild female imaginations.” However, the story skips over the assaults and, instead, deals with the existential questions facing the women. Do they stay or leave?

The audiobook keeps you motivated to move as the women discuss the pros, cons, religious implications, and moral aspects. “The discrepancies between our modern-day laws versus the Mennonite religion were interesting to contemplate, especially their final decision to leave the community rather than fight. The audiobook was very thought-provoking.” 4.7 Sneakers for Motivation to Move.

As you get further into the story, you realize why the narrator is male, adding a clever layer by bringing a male perspective into the account. Members sped up the narrator ranging from 1.15 to 1.4 x normal speed, making the Women Talking audiobook ideal for a week’s worth of walks or a full day of Non-Exercise Active Thermogenesis (NEAT energy). Because the narration was on the slower side, 4.5 Sneakers for Quality of Narration; however, this aspect is easily adjusted by changing the speed.

"The Women" by Kristin Hannah is an excellent novel that The Walking Book Club® highly recommends as an audiobook for those looking for a download rated high in Motivation to Move, Quality of Narration, and Overall Experience. Despite negative reviews that find the main character, Frankie, as unlikeable, I found the book meaningful. Hannah manages to blend history, fashion, culture, and food in her storytelling, much like in her other popular works such as "The Nightingale," "The Great Alone," and "The Four Winds." What sets "The Women" apart is that it sheds light on the evolution of post-traumatic stress disorder, which is an important issue. The main character, Frankie, seeks help but is repeatedly away and ultimately turns to pills and alcohol to numb the pain, a very human response to untreated trauma.

The quality of narration by Julia Whelan is superb, as she brings the story to life with subtle vocal nuances. The book is captivating from the first hour and motivates the listener to move, making it a five-sneaker audiobook in terms of motivation. Julia's pacing is perfect. I recommend speeding it up a little if you like at a quicker pace. I found 1.2-1.3 ideal.

In conclusion, 'The Women' is a must-read for fans of historical fiction and those who have enjoyed Kristin Hannah's previous works. The unique blend of history, culture, and the exploration of post-traumatic stress disorder, coupled with Julia Whelan's exceptional narration, make this audiobook a standout choice.

"Reflective Ripples: A Covenant of Water"

At its core, "The Covenant of Water" is a testament to the profound interconnectedness of all things. An epic tale of three generations of Indian families plagued by drowning and medical mysteries spans seven decades. Verghese skillfully weaves together threads of spirituality, science, and philosophy, offering readers a tapestry of insights into the sacred bond between humanity and the elements. Through vivid prose and poignant storytelling, he leads us on a journey of self-discovery and spiritual awakening.

While Verghese's prose is undeniably beautiful, some listeners may sometimes find the book's philosophical musings dense. The depth of insight offered in "The Covenant of Water" requires careful consideration and reflection, making it best suited for listeners willing to engage deeply with its themes and commit to over 30 hours of listening and moving. For this reason, several members felt the novel might be best enjoyed in the written form. Even at a speed of 1.5, the audiobook is a lengthy 21-hour experience.

In relation to Verghese's work as the narrator, The Covenant of Water, there were mixed reviews from our members. While some appreciated the author's contribution to the novel's narrative voice, others had negative remarks about his inexperienced voice-acting skills when portraying different characters.

If you enjoy stories with medical and scientific elements woven into the plot, the fact that Verghese is trained as a physician may be an enjoyable aspect. However, some listeners may find the technical details off-putting.

This novel is a heart-wrenching yet inspirational masterpiece that delves into the themes of love and grief, family ties, and the resilience of the human spirit. If you loved "The Four Winds" or "Where the Crawdads Sing," put Go As A River on your TBTL (to-be-listened-to) list.

Immersive experience - You can hear the busy streets and smell the spice aromas

"That's the thing about books. They let you travel without moving your feet."
― Jhumpa Lahiri, an apropos sentiment for The Henna Artist.

Journey to Jaipur Indian in the 1950s. The Henna Artist is rich with India's culture; you can almost hear the busy streets and smell the spices' aroma. After escaping from an abusive marriage, Lakshmi becomes a highly respected henna artist to the innermost elite circle of wealthy women. Her skills go beyond her artistic talents, which adds interesting elements.

One aspect that grabbed my attention was Lakshmi's herbal treatments and medicine for women and birth control. Across time and culture, many of the recent audiobooks in The Walking Book Club have references to the role of women as behind-the-scenes healers for other women. The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner, set in London in the late 1700s, and The Book of Lost Friends by Lisa Wingate, set in the south during The Reconstruction, have women as healers with knowledge of herbs and botanicals for treating various conditions. In The Henna Artist, you experience this subject theme in another time and culture. Different yet similar.

Narration is well cast and pleasant to the ear. However, listeners may want to consider speeding up the pace. The accompanying Reading Guide download from the publisher is a welcome reference tool.

This audiobook is excellent for anyone wanting an adventure to a different time and place. Beautifully written, pleasantly narrated, highly engaging.

“For a family, schizophrenia is, primarily, a felt experience, as if the foundation of the family is permanently tilted in the direction of the sick family member. Even if just one child has schizophrenia, everything about the internal logic of that family changes.”

Hidden Valley Road might just be our favorite non-fiction audiobook to date!

Riveting, gripping, heart wrenching are all apt adjectives for the true story of one family’s mind-blowing experience with schizophrenia. In addition to the story’s humanity, the author weaves in psychiatry’s historical aspects, drug development, and treatment over eight decades. It covers the treatments from institutionalization, lobotomy to shock therapy.

Because this was a group selection, there is a curriculum of book extras on our Discussion Group Facebook page. You can find more information on the Galvin family, interviews with the sisters, and family pictures. There is also a link to an interesting article on “mother blaming” and the schizophrenogenic mother. Simply search the #hiddenvallyroad through the spyglass at the top right of the Discussion Group page.

Every once in a while, an audiobook comes along that keeps us motivated to move and listen for hours because it’s that captivating – Hidden Valley Road is one. Thank you, Galvin family, for your honesty and bravery. Bravo, Robert Kolker, for telling the family’s story in an honest, informative, and compassionate manner.

This is an audiobook that educates rather than entertains, making the narration less influential to the content; still, the narration is well done and appropriate for the subject.

This audiobook was recommended by a friend and I'm glad I took her advice. Believe It, written and narrated by Jamie Kern Lima, was a nice change of pace from fiction to a memoir. I must admit, I did not know about It Cosmetics and found her grit, determination, and honesty inspiring.

When the author narrates their own audiobook, you feel even more connected to the story and the person. It's like walking with a friend.
