Story
In her ruefully funny and wickedly perceptive debut novel, Alison Espach deftly dissects matters of the heart and captures the lives of children and adults as they come to terms with life, death, and love. At the center of this affluent suburban universe is Emily Vidal, a smart and snarky teenager, who gets involved in a suspect relationship with one of the adults after witnessing a suicide in her neighborhood.

This book should be called lots and lots of sex because honestly it's filled with it. Very graphic teenage and adult sex. Sex everywhere!
The book was all over the place and confusing at times. It just seems like it was thrown together quick. Some might love it, but it definitely wasn't my cup of tea.

Story
It’s a beautiful day in Newport, Rhode Island, when Phoebe Stone arrives at the grand Cornwall Inn wearing a green dress and gold heels, not a bag in sight, alone. She's immediately mistaken by everyone in the lobby for one of the wedding people, but she’s actually the only guest at the Cornwall who isn’t here for the big event. Phoebe is here because she’s dreamed of coming for years—she hoped to shuck oysters and take sunset sails with her husband, only now she’s here without him, at rock bottom, and determined to have one last decadent splurge on herself.

First of all, if you are bothered by curse words or sex talk, this is not the book for you.
This book hits on all the feels. It will make you happy and sad and worried and shocked, and annoyed and blessed to have been swept away into such a great story.
The narration was honestly the best narration I have ever heard on audible. It definitely brought this story to life. ❤️

The narrator was awful
Reviewed: 04-12-24
First of all it was a good story. It was well written and I really enjoyed it.
However the narrator was horrible. She seriously used a Louisiana accent for Massachusetts characters. I mean when she remembered to use it. She also spoke so monotone that I was ready to fall asleep just listening to her. She just read this story all wrong. Even just the way she read the story was off. Putting no emphasis or too much emphasis on so many conversations. ugh!
My advice... read the book.. you will enjoy it so much more.

This was a great book! The narrators were excellent. The male narrator totally nailed the Massachusetts accent which I loved. Most people mutilate it lol.
There should be a The Rumor 2... book. I need to know what happens later on in their lives.

too many characters to follow
Reviewed: 02-20-24
I am definitely struggling to finish this book. Maybe hoping it will get better for me. Others will love it I am sure. But for me it is very hard to keep track of everyone and what they did. Or the multiple people cheating on their spouses and with whom they are cheating/or cheated with. I feel like I am reading a click bait story from Facebook. You know the ones that drag on and on so that you can see advertisements.
I think jumping around from character to character and then telling stories from the past is confusing. And the Addison character totally threw me off as I kept thinking he was a girl lol. That is a girl's name lol.
I usually love all of this authors books. This one didn't do it for me.
It was a lot!

I absolutely loved this book! There are so many different story lines going on at the same time. Many plot twists.
The narrator was absolutely fantastic.
I would give it more stars if I could.
I have a little bit of a commute to work. And I usually only listen to my books when I drive. This book had me so hooked that I was listening to it on my Echo in the house while I did chores. It was just fantastic!

I love Lisa Wingate . However the narrator to this book totally ruined it for me. I felt like I was listening to a documentary . Her monotone voice was so boring it could not keep my attention.
So it's saying I have to rate the story. I have never read a story by Lisa Wingate that I didn't like so I will give it the benefit of the doubt since I didn't finish it.
