Story
In the middle of the night, in a house on a quiet street in suburban Minneapolis, intruders silently murder Luke Ellis' parents and load him into a black SUV. The operation takes less than two minutes. Luke will wake up at The Institute, in a room that looks just like his own, except there's no window. And outside his door are other doors, behind which are other kids with special talents - telekinesis and telepathy - who got to this place the same way Luke did: Kalisha, Nick, George, Iris, and 10-year-old Avery Dixon.

Action, drama, 'page-turner'

I really enoyed this book and couldn't stop listening though the last third of the story felt a bit rushed. I can easily imagine this turning into a movie as it seems 'made-for-tv' dramatic.

Why Apaches? asks the 10-year-old son. Because they were the last of something, answers his father. In their car, they play games and sing along to music. But on the radio, there is news about an "immigration crisis": thousands of kids trying to cross the Southwestern border into the US but getting detained - or lost in the desert along the way.

poetic, not always smooth
Reviewed: 01-17-21
I found parts of this book very poetic and beautiful and other parts very slow. The story and the subject covered is difficult, deep, and emotional. There are aspects to the way the story is told that I genuinely loved though at times it felt a bit disjointed - like many different stories - and I struggled to keep my focus. Alas over halfway through the book the author weaves the various stories together and the reader has a more comprehensive picture. I did appreciate the way the writing felt different than many popular books, helping to emphasize the underlying content in a very crisp, pure manner.

While the story is a bit far-fetched, I frankly couldn't 'put it down'. I enjoyed the way the story came together, starting with the outer shell and peeling away the layers until little by little the reader got to hear more of the core reality. The narration was done very well.

Very enjoyable story. unrealistic but that's half the fun. I popped a few choice words every time I thought there was going to be a big reveal but that certainly made it more enjoyable to read.

Good underlying message about the good and bad in the world. Good performance. a little hard to understand at times. the volume difference between the loud and quiet parts was significant. had to have the volume cranked to hear the quiet parts.

This is a good story overall. I felt like it started out slow and I was afraid I wouldn't be able to finish it, however the story really picked up and I enjoyed reading to the end. The performance was good but the author uses extreme voice inflection and at times he's speaking so softly I have to crank the volume all the way up and I can still barely hear what he's saying.

I could not put this book down, so-to-speak. It was such an enjoyable read. the storyline was engaging. the characters were interesting, complete and relatable. the book is written such that you're reading lots of mini stories but they're all combined for an overarching, holistic story. I hope there's more to follow this book because I can't wait to read it.
