Story
James's great adventure begins with a simple thing — a rustic cabin in the countryside. Charmed by the prospect, he decides to leave his stressful city life behind and move into the woods. But country living isn't boring. There's a quaint town nearby with kind folks who still help each other out. Maybe the bubbly blonde storekeeper has a job or two for James? And let's not forget the magical legacy waiting for James, tracing back through the history of his family.

lacks story

The same way people would pad their school paper with saying the same thing in different way. This book series pads the run time with excessive sex scenes. It's like a third of the book with stupidly slow progression during the rest of it. Picture a narrated for the blind porn parody movie and you would have an excellent idea of the experience from this book.

complete disappointment.

Got progressively more annoyed with every character until I dropped it. They are all two dimensional and quickly get repetitive except for when the author just had them make a decisions out of no where because otherwise the story wouldn't progress or be as dramatic. It is so bad that the Author will be ignored from now on.

Story
Gus is a henchman separated from his friends at his new job, a henchman on an orbiting space base. He's happy with the gig, and has no real delusions of grandeur. Well...small delusions, but he’s seen all too often what happens to minions that get too uppity around their supervillain bosses. His father had pulled a few strings and landed him a henchman position in hopes he could make something of himself. Before he's barely gotten used to the job, Gus narrowly escapes the base's destruction and is chucked at the planet below.

consistently inconsistent
Reviewed: 12-11-20
Only good as background noise.. The story has glaring consistency problems throughout with stats and world conditions changing with no care for what was said before. Every problem in the novel is solved by plot armor with some lucky skill or accident happening to save the main character. The powet scaling for enemies that the mc faces is stunted then rushed making it unbelievable. The world building is disjointed or just a lie to make the book seem different with trying to say its a superhero novel but it just turns into a generic litrpg scenario with "superpowers" acting suspicious like that thing called abilities.I definitely won't be reading anymore in this series and probably not from this author in the future.

progressively disappointing
Reviewed: 03-06-19
I started off thinking the book was ok not great but good enough to pass the time. it was nothing but a down hill experience from there. The base storyline is standard lone outsider comes into wasteland and attempts to save it. the characters have personality only in the sense of check marks on a sheet. Every attempt at development or explanation for a characters actions are portrayed through said character saying how they are such and such so thats why they did it or the main character describing said character in some benign narration. There are major continuity issues throughout the entire book. The author shows a distinct lack of experience or imagination with his displays of horror or technical savvy making important scene become annoying or boring. also his solutions to issues that arise for the characters are mostly uninspired and/or clumsy. overall not worth the effort to listen to, you are better of forgetting this book even existed and that is what I will now attempt to do myself.
the narrator's performance was ok but he mispronounced a couple commonly used words through the course of the book which got annoying.

EMP the magical plot device
Reviewed: 06-26-15
I didn't finish it I just couldn't stomach the ludicrous science used as the central plot device. My recommendation is that if you have any decent knowledge about how EMP actually works then avoid this book otherwise you might enjoy it but don't expect much it's fairly average in all other writing aspects.

What did you like best about Playing with Fire? What did you like least?
I read Playing with fire as an ebook first and loved it. the character was witty, sarcastic, and tough but i couldn't finish the audio book. it was still the same story but the inflections of the narrator seemed to change the main character into something altogether annoying.
Any additional comments?
Really read the ebook instead.

What does Mark Boyett bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Mark Boyett does a superb job of convey the emotional tones and nuances of the characters that are natural when listening to someone in real life tell a story, but are usually lost or ignored when reading text
