Story
Swordsman, soldier, poet...and possessor of the biggest nose in all of France! Cyrano de Bergerac was all this and more, for behind his grotesque face beat the heart of a lover. And, being Cyrano, who could he fall in love with but the most beautiful woman in Paris? From this conflict of nose versus heart springs one of the most uproarious, tender, funny, painful, and action-packed stories of all time - a tale that has its roots in truth, for Cyrano de Bergerac really existed.

Cyrano is one of my favourite plays of all time and Geraldine McCaughrean one of my favourite authors, so this is a huge treasure for me. Beautifully written! I didn’t love the full cast narration, but Cynthia Bishop is excellent.

Philippa Langley reveals the findings of a remarkable new research initiative: ‘The Missing Princes Project'. In the summer of 1483, Edward V (aged 12) and his brother Richard Duke of York (aged 9), disappeared from the Tower of London. For over 500 years, history has judged that they were murdered on the orders of their uncle Richard III. Following years of intensive research in UK, American and European archives, astonishing new archival discoveries have been uncovered that change what we know about the fate of the Princes in the Tower.

I’ve been fascinated by the Princes in the Tower mystery since I was a kid and was so excited about this book. The new information brought to light in it is amazing. But I can’t finish listening. I don’t know why anyone ever thinks it’s a good idea to have authors who aren’t trained as narrators read their own books. Langley might be a wonderful researcher, but she’s a terrible narrator. Non-fiction narration requires a lot of skill and training to bring the text to life. This reading is completely flat, with weird pauses that sound like periods after every few words (often in the middle of names), and unfortunately mangled pronunciation of foreign names and words. Additionally, there are editing errors, with small sections being duplicated. I slogged through nearly 10 hours before finally deciding that I couldn’t take any more. Maybe I’ll buy the print book at some point.

This book came into my life as a piece of synchronicity and has had a big impact already. It’s well written, fascinating, and the perfect blend of being open without being credulous. The narration is just right and it’s a pleasure to listen to in addition to being captivating. If you have any interest in anomalous phenomena, this is a must read!

The narrator was a bit meh. Completely competent, I just felt like this book deserved a more sophisticated reading. But I still enjoyed the listen immensely.

I love this story, I love the paintings, the writing, the narrator. Really well done. Only comment is that there was a surprising amount of extraneous noise for a professional audio production. But it didn’t detract from my enjoyment.

What a treasure trove this collection is! I can’t believe there’s all of Jane Austen, so beautifully narrated, available for the price of a single book. Alison Larkin does a brilliant job bringing the text to life and capturing each character in all their nuances. I binge listened and now I’m sad it’s over!
I see some people have complained that the breaking up of it into parts makes each book hard to find, but there’s a list included that tells you exactly where everything is. And of course the divisions weren’t the narrator/producer’s choice; Audible did that.
