Story
Innovation is the main event of the modern age, the reason we experience both dramatic improvements in our living standards and unsettling changes in our society. Forget short-term symptoms like Donald Trump and Brexit, it is innovation itself that explains them and that will itself shape the 21st century for good and ill. Yet innovation remains a mysterious process, poorly understood by policy makers and businessmen, hard to summon into existence to order, yet inevitable and inexorable when it does happen.

In-depth view of innovation

Ridley breaks down successes and failures around innovation as far back as the number “0”. It’s enlightening, inspiring, and worth the time to gain a little more insight into one of man’s most important attributes: innovation.

Story
A manifesto of business practices for those who sell ideas and advice, The Win Without Pitching Manifesto lays out 12 steps - in the form of proclamations - that owners of creative businesses can take to distance themselves from their competition, regain the high ground in their client relationships and learn to win business without first parting with their thinking or writing lengthy proposals. The 12 proclamations were written to inspire owners of independent creative businesses to rethink how their services are bought and sold.

When I started I was a bit skeptical, but by the end of the book, I’ve found myself recommending it to anyone I know in service-based creative industries. It’s a great read and fantastic resource.

Story
If the Bible isn’t a science book or an instruction manual, then what is it? What do people mean when they say the Bible is inspired? When Rachel Held Evans found herself asking these questions, she began a quest to better understand what the Bible is and how it is meant to be read. What she discovered changed her—and it will change you too.
Drawing on the best in recent scholarship and using her well-honed literary expertise, Evans examines some of our favorite Bible stories and possible interpretations, retelling them through memoir, original poetry, short stories, soliloquies, and even a short screenplay. Undaunted by the Bible’s most difficult passages, Evans wrestles through the process of doubting, imagining, and debating Scripture’s mysteries. The Bible, she discovers, is not a static work but is a living, breathing, captivating, and confounding book that is able to equip us to join God’s loving and redemptive work in the world.

Hermeneutics for people that don't use the word

Fascinating Biblical History, unfortunate progressive political sway
Reviewed: 10-03-22
I bought this book on a whim. Overall, I enjoyed it. I found it interesting, learned new things about the Bible, enjoyed the author’s style. The only thing I didn’t enjoy was the condensing tone towards “traditional” “conservative” Christians. The author has a clear political stance that didn’t feel very unifying. It wasn’t anything I couldn’t get past, it just felt like an unnecessary place to promote a political agenda.

If your thought bubbles burst in your brain before they turn to words, and what comes out of your mouth is scrambled sense, then this is the book for you! It was totally worth the 5hrs of listening. I got some great tips, and while I am still terrified to try them out in real life application, I'm giving myself positive reinforcement. I can do it because Carmine said I could.

The Business Secrets for Designers
Reviewed: 03-21-16
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Direct business advice for designers. I have been searching for this book! It's practical and entertaining. Highly recommend this read for anyone working in client services, but especially with designers. The audiobook was fast and interesting. Hearing the book in Mike's own words gave even more impact to his advice.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Design Is a Job?
"Even good work can be better. The goal is never to make something good enough. The goal is also never to work hard on something. The goal is always to get it right."
What about Mike Monteiro’s performance did you like?
His voice is exactly what you imagined. It's rough enough to feel a little intimidating. Like he might seek you out and rail you if you don't heed his advice.
