Story
Most Civil War battles took place along major roads, railroads, and waterways. And yet this perspective hasn't been fully explored when it comes to Gettysburg. Gettysburg Ranger and historian Troy Harman draws on a lifetime of researching the Civil War and more than thirty years of studying the terrain of Gettysburg and south-central Pennsylvania and northern Maryland to reframe the story of the Battle of Gettysburg.

Please learn how to pronounce Harry Heth
Reviewed: 12-13-24
I lost all interest in this book when the narrator failed to pronounce Harry Heth's last name. The book is slow moving, and it's very critical of other history authors. The writing contains a quality of arrogance.

Story
Kate Fox has just defeated her ex-husband in the race for Grand County sheriff, but there’s no time for celebration. Instead, she’s called to the railroad tracks just outside of town. The train engineer is dead. His conductor is in shock. And Kate’s gut is telling her this is much more than just a horrific accident. The victim's widow is behaving oddly. The neighbor’s story doesn’t add up. The victim had recently made several enemies - and they all have motive for murder.

Great storyline, but ending was overkill
Reviewed: 07-05-24
I enjoy the entire story, with the exception of the ending. It was crazy chaos that wasn't necessary but seemed more like filler. It was also discouraging to see an otherwise capable female sheriff make so many blunders the final hour. It seemed to counter her performance throughout the book's beginning.

As they do each June, the Foxes have driven the winding roads of Appalachia to drop off their children for a two-week stay at their grandmother’s. Here, twelve-year-old Thea can run free and breathe in the smell of pine. But as her parents head back to suburban Virginia, they have no idea they’re about to cross paths with a ticking time bomb. Back in Kentucky, Thea and her grandmother Lucy both awaken from the same nightmare. And though the two have never discussed the special kind of sight they share, they know as soon as their tearful eyes meet that something terrible has happened.

This is too similar to NR 'Under Currents'
Reviewed: 05-27-24
As I started listening to this, I was strongly reminded of Nora Roberts' Under Currents. Characters had the same traits, voices the same, personalities the same, storyline followed the same trajectory. And most annoying were the cliches. The children were flat and their responses to external trauma were flat. I sense recycled material. Also, please, NR, drop the use of 'the ladies' in all your books. It's getting old!

Story
Daphne always loved the way her fiancé Peter told their story. How they met (on a blustery day), fell in love (over an errant hat), and moved back to his lakeside hometown to begin their life together. He really was good at telling it…right up until the moment he realized he was actually in love with his childhood best friend Petra. Which is how Daphne begins her new story.

Reviewed: 05-16-24
The characters are shallow, the banter cliche. There is no real substance here. If you've read one of these books, you've read this one. Could not find one endearing character trait for any of the characters. Dull. Why do these authors keep writing the same book using different character names?

It seems straightforward to Attorney Nate Shepherd: a middle-aged billionaire dies while celebrating at a wedding reception. As Nate Shepherd steps in to defend her, he tries to deflect the misplaced anger that’s directed at the woman for the tragedy. I enjoy both the author's writing and the narrator chosen to record these books. The series is very down to earth and Shep is a middle-of-the-road kinda guy. At some points throughout my listening, I get the feeling that the series really isn't about Shep, but instead the secondary characters with whom he interacts. And I like the absence of ego. This author often surprises me with his work...

I've never finished a Freida McFadden title
Reviewed: 02-08-24
I'm definitely not in the majority here, but this is another Freida McFadden book that didn't hold my interest or seem to have a strong storyline. This is probably my fifth book by this author that I gave up on because it didn't seem to go anywhere. When an author has to continually over-explain reasons why a character is making bad decisions, it may be time to rethink not only the character but also the storyline. There was too much direction by the author instead of the book simply unfolding. Juvenile at best.

Los Angeles, 1920s: Socialite Mirielle West's days are crowded with shopping, luncheons, and prepping for the myriad glittering parties she attends with her actor husband, Charlie. She's been too busy to even notice the small patch of pale skin on the back of her hand. Other than an occasional overindulgence in gin and champagne, which helps to numb the pain of recent tragedy, Mirielle is the picture of health. But her doctor insists on more tests, and Mirielle reluctantly agrees. The diagnosis - leprosy - is devastating and unthinkable.

What took me so long to purchase this book!?

I loved it. I've always been a fan of Barara O'Neal...I'm not sure why it took me until 2024 to purchase and listen to this book. The material highlighted just how deep dysfunction can run in a family...and how possible it is to heal. Good stuff. I rarely cry when listening, but I did cry a couple of times during this audible book.

...then it became very difficult to continue listening to. The reviews don't address the very last line of the book, a line which then confuses the entire storyline. The storyline was disjointed. Too much hopping around. I didn't like any of the characters enough to not skip ahead. I'm at 4 hours to go and it's really tough to keep listening. I hope there is some redeeming quality that pulls me back in.

Story
Back in college, Jane Lewis would have given anything to be like homecoming queen Connie Bryan. Instead she was just Plain Jane - overweight, frumpy, and painfully shy. That was then. Today, a lovely and confident Dr. Jane Lewis has a thriving psychotherapy practice, her own radio talk show, a beautiful old Louisiana mansion, and her affectionate, nutty dog, Olive, to keep her company. The only thing missing is someone to share her life.
