I really like Colleen Hoover as an author as she has a gift of storytelling and is an amazing author. This book really stands out with its dramatization, delving into the psychological aspects of childhood trauma and the negative effects it can have on someone into adulthood. I truly felt for the character Sloane as she seemed to endure so much abuse throughout her young life but there is a happy ending after all.

Lillian Linden is a liar. On the surface, she looks like a brave survivor of a plane crash. But she's been lying to her family, her friends, and the whole world since rescue helicopters scooped her and her fellow survivor, Dave Hall, off a deserted island in the South Pacific. Missing for almost two years, the castaways are thrust into the spotlight after their rescue, becoming media darlings overnight. But they can't tell the real story--so they lie.

Castaway Part 2-Spoiler
Reviewed: 10-12-22
I absolutely loved this book. Castaway is one of my favorite movies and this book was similar but had its own unique differences such as more than one person tapped on the deserted island. They learned to adapt to life there. There is lots of action and the book keeps you guessing what would happen next. It is confusing when the reporters about the event mention “Paul” since his identity is not revealed until later in the book. I was so sad when he died. With all the “secrets,” lies and messiness, the book wraps up nicely. I loved all the characters except Kent (for obvious reasons) but at times I felt that Lilly was portrayed as a little too fragile. Highly recommend.

A book that makes you think
Reviewed: 09-14-22
This book had everything: excitement, mystery, science, conspiracies and a puppy! This is my first read from Matthew Mather and I will be reading more of his works. He tells a great story. I became interested in this book from watching shows like “Manifest” and “Into the Night” on Netflix about plane mysteries. It was intriguing to think about the earth’s magnetic potentially reversing and other theories about what happened to cause the plane to crash. The author is so great at describing the hunger, thirst and extreme cold that the passengers experienced. I found myself shivering in empathy. I was like, “There’s no way they can survive in 50 below!” I still had a lot of questions at the last few chapters of the book but the author wraps it up nicely at the end. Great read!

Story
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

A brave story: The effect of a narcissistic mother on her daughter
Reviewed: 09-05-22
Jennette accounts her life story, much of which was controlled by her narcissistic and abusive mother. I related to this book because I, too, had a narcissistic and abusive mother. There is no more relationship complicated than that of a daughter and mother. I recently lost my mother and when I saw the advertisement for this book I was intrigued. I empathized with Jenette in that no one in the family stepped up to help or protect her (sadly, they all had issues of their own). Both her grandparents and father turned a blind eye to her mother’s controlling behavior. Her grandpa did make comments about Jenette needing a childhood but he ultimately chose not to stand up to his daughter. Also, the comments that her grandmother made to Jenette, “You bitch, you only care about yourself!” were disturbing and reminded me of things my mom would say to me. In this way, her grandmother was also a narcissist and more than likely a borderline personality and this carried on in her daughter. Due to the abuse and control, Jenette developed alcoholism, bulimia and a poor self image. This was very difficult to overcome but I applaud her for getting help, healing and eventually finding her way to becoming her own person without her mother’s influence. The title of the book is striking but not intended to be in a malicious way. If her mom wouldn’t have died, Jenette would still be lost and abused to this day. Just as I feel, I miss my mom dearly but I’m relieved she’s not suffering as a result of her own poor choices and I’m glad not be verbally abused anymore. Thank you for writing this book, Jenette, I hope you are still finding your peace.

John Lithgow has an amazing voice and his performance as a snooty play director
was stellar. The book is short and has action throughout. Definitely kept me guessing what would happen next. Who is the murderer? Who is the adulterer? Who is the rapist? Read this to find out. Highly recommend and will likely listen to it again.

If I were dead, I wouldn't be able to see. If I were dead, I wouldn't be able to feel. If I were dead, he'd never raise his hand to me again. If I were dead, his words wouldn't cut as deep as they do. If I were dead, I'd be beautiful and I wouldn't be so...ugly. I'm not dead...but I wish I was.

Incredible story

I was drawn to Lily’s character who suffered through abusive all of her life, starting with her parents (mostly her father) and her husband Trent. It was difficult to hear that she internalized the verbal abuse and believed she was ugly, stupid and worthless. I found myself asking myself, “Why did she take the abuse and pain for so long? Why didn’t she leave sooner?” It was uncomfortable to listen to her be beaten physically and mentally. But it was great to see the development of her strength though counseling and finally being around those that truly loved and cared for her who helped her out of the dark place she was in (though no fault of her own). What a really admired about Lily was her resilience. She could never be anything but beautiful, intelligent and a kind soul despite the mountain of adversity she climbed. Lily was finally able to heal and got her happy ending! Highly recommend. I couldn’t stop listening!

Amazing stories

Shawn Inmon has a way of telling stories that gets you hooked. I started off by listening to The Unusual Second Life of Thomas Weaver and was fascinated by the life of Thomas Weaver and the other characters in the story. When I found out there were more books in the series, I was very excited. I love how he ties in and interweaves all the characters from each book. I’m especially interested in time travel and love the movie/book The Time Traveler’s Wife and the book Oona Out of Order. His books are unique in their own ways that they don’t copy/borrow from other author’s ideas. He also shares his own life stories and how the characters were inspired which adds a personal touch. I’m glad I gave this book a chance. It’s probably one of my favorites now. It was good to take step out if the murder mystery genre. I’m still trying to figure out the dimensions piece of the story and how many different dimensions we could live in and exist in. Interesting concept but as a Christian I’m not trying to disprove anything the Bible teaches us. Great series. Look forward to diving in to the next set of books!
