Story
One of Daphne Wade's guilty pleasures is to watch the Duke of Tremore as he works, shirtless, on the excavation site of his ducal estate. Anthony Courtland is by far the most exciting and handsome man she has ever known, and she dreams of one day being able to speak with him without getting tongue tied. Anthony, meanwhile, only sees her as a hard worker on his excavation team. He considers her a plain young lady and says so to a friend, unaware that Daphne is outside the library door, her heart shattering to pieces. So Daphne decides she will not be so silly any longer.

I wanted a quick “beach read” but this story kept losing my interest. I think a great deal of my disinterest stemmed from the narrator.

The Thought of Another Man Touching Her Made Her “Thick”
Reviewed: 08-30-23
“Thick”? “Thick”?! Oh!!!! Ok. “Sick”.
I had to rewind just to understand Sadie and what she was trying to say!! Oh my goodness!! Why, oh why, would a narrator throw in a speech impediment that’s not part of the storyline?! Just for fun?!! And why was this allowed?!
The story was a good one, continuing the saga of the Harper Girls. I particularly liked the stories of Maggie and Marion. The scenes of nursing in a field hospital are vivid and easy to imagine!
But the narration was absolutely lacking. Sadie and Kathy spoke so slowly and in such monotone voices that I was immediately reminded of Kerry in the tv show In Country. (Only Kerry is funny!)
I’m only working my way through the series because I like the storylines but in all honesty I almost DNF due to the narration.

Good Story but Beware of the Narration
Reviewed: 08-30-23
The stories of the Harper Girls continue to entertain and impress me to the point where I could see this becoming a limited edition series on PBS or Netflix. I enjoy the multiple storylines as well as the development of the main characters as they develop relationships and experience the war.
I raised the narration from a 1 star in my previous reviews to 2 stars this time because Marco is now a BIT easier to understand and Sadie no longer has the speech impediment. Jennie, however, sounds like an angry and nasally Velma from Scooby-Doo. Twice I had to go back to re-listen to the word “pneumonia” to understand what Jennie was saying with her American accent. And I’m American!!?
The narrator has a lovely speaking voice but I feel as if her agent/manager did her a disservice with this role.

Good Story but Bring Back the Original Narrator PLEASE!
Reviewed: 08-12-23
The story is good and the author does a nice job juggling several main characters while transitioning new ones which I assume will be the focus of the next book. Story has historical accuracy which I appreciate.
Ugh! The narrator, though!! I kept having to rewind to try to understand Mr. Marco. Winnie pronounces all of her “R’s” as “W’s” (?! Why? There’s no mention of a speech impediment in the previous two books!?) and the American sister of Mr. Harper uses Canadian pronunciations at times. I feel like the narrator was trying too hard to differentiate between too many characters.
I’ll finish the series because I now feel invested in the storyline but hope the narration gets better.

Excellent! Even More So Than I Expected!

Why buy an audiobook of a hardback that I already owned? The narrators, of course!! I had yet to begin my hardback copy when the leader of my book club asked for suggestions. “Well,” I said, “I received a copy of The Boys for Christmas but I haven’t had the chance to start it yet.” Within minutes, we had agreed that this would be the book. Within 1/2 hour, a member texted that she had started the audiobook and LOVED it! That was enough for me!
This book is a beautiful combination of both a well-written Hollywood memoir and “love letters” to Ron and Clint’s parents and the family the created. Touching, tender, and at times, laugh-out-loud funny, this book has it all! And the narrators do a pretty decent job, too! (Lol!)
Thank you Ron and Clint! You’ve set the bar high for displays of respect, listening, learning, professionalism, and of course, parenting!

Quite good and well worth continuing with the series
Reviewed: 10-30-21
I loved the first book in the series which was “assigned” for my book club. I went ahead with this second book but was somewhat disappointed in the performance. The narrator was fine and did numerous voices but I didn’t care for the way she performed the role of Maisie. (I would’ve rather had her perform it the way she did the basic text.) Maisie, at times, seemed both bored and pompous. I almost didn’t continue with the book but finally decided the storyline was worth staying.
