Clanton, Mississippi. 1990. Jake Brigance finds himself embroiled in a deeply divisive trial when the court appoints him attorney for Drew Gamble, a timid sixteen-year-old boy accused of murdering a local deputy. Many in Clanton want a swift trial and the death penalty, but Brigance digs in and discovers that there is more to the story than meets the eye. I was confused by all the details that ultimately
proved to be irrelevant until the closing comments by the author. I think this book was written for a audience that had developed an affinity for the characters and not so much about a good story.

In So You Want to Talk About Race, Ijeoma Oluo offers a contemporary, accessible take on the racial landscape in America, addressing head-on such issues as privilege, police brutality, intersectionality, micro-aggressions, the Black Lives Matter movement, and the "N" word. Perfectly positioned to bridge the gap between people of color and white Americans struggling with race complexities, Oluo answers the questions listeners don't dare ask and explains the concepts that continue to elude everyday Americans.

Soul Sucking

I selected this book to help me better understand the whole race discussion. I finished the book depressed and feeling terrible for the author. She lives in a world where she and everyone with similar skin color are victims of oppression and are held in contempt or are outright hated by a powerful majority. There is no God in this world, and very few if any fathers. Just single mom’s being held back by a racist majority and living in poverty. Awful circumstances in an awful country. It’s not hard to understand here resentment and anger.
I didn’t get a better understanding of the race discussion. I have no doubt that the author absolutely believes everything she says. She is not lying. I also think that people that believe they are victims have a harder time living happy and productive lives. As long as people feel this way there is little hope of a meaningful discussion about race, but we can always strive to be more kind.
Pretty sure that author would say that people like me are part of the problem. I’m stuck because someone’s race tells me absolutely nothing about them. To paraphrase Victor Frankel, there are only two races the decent and the indecent. I live in a different world.

Story
Late Victorian London. When James Miller, the most respectable of Scottish businessmen, is pulled, dead, from the Thames, his daughter is drawn into an investigation which reveals a whole world of secrets and corruption. Alongside local detective Culley, Catriona’s search for her father’s killer leads all the way to the tragic truth behind the ghostly legend of The Darkwater Bride and the power of her deadly kiss. The Darkwater Bride combines the genres of the Victorian mystery thriller with the equally classic Victorian mode of the ghostly tale.

I was expecting a traditional audio book where the narrator may use inflections in their reading voice to portray different characters. This production plays like an old radio show drama complete with sound effects and actors. I almost stopped listening because it seemed so over produced, but once I understood I let the show go on and enjoyed it very much. It's a good story but longer than it needed to be - with the end being overly complex and painfully drawn out.

I learned so much from this book. It's written with zero consideration of PC culture which I found refreshing. He backs up all assertions with examples. Most importantly, his arguments comport with common sense. I am able to apply what I learned here with several race / ethnic peculiarities I've observed during world travels (for example traveling in Indonesia, most merchants where Chinese, and most taxi-cab drivers where of Indian descent). I have a new understanding of human behavior.

They've created enough colonies so humanity shouldn't go extinct.

Story
When Marshall McEwan left his hometown at age 18, he vowed never to return. The trauma that drove him away ultimately spurred him to become one of the most successful journalists in Washington DC. But just as the political chaos in the nation’s capital lifts him to new heights, Marshall is forced to return home in spite of his boyhood vow. His father is dying, his mother is struggling to keep the family newspaper from failing, and the town is in the midst of an economic rebirth that might be built upon crimes that reach into the state capitol - and perhaps even to Washington.

This was my first (and last) book by Greg Iles. The story kept dragging on with mostly superfluous details like the main characters car, a Flex (why?), and the hairy bush of his lover. The main characters where all so flawed that you end up not really caring how the story will end. To make the story worse it’s sprinkled with references to how awful Trump and “trumpers” are. I think the author was trying to be edgy, but it added nothing to the story and just served as political commentary (again why?). Scott Brick was the only redeeming aspect of the book, but it makes me wonder if he gets to pick and choose the stories he narrates.
