Story
Sarah Garland, a retired homicide detective who's gone through a painful divorce, seems to have found her peace at last, as a coffeeshop owner in the sleepy (and freezing) small town of Snow Falls, Alaska. What she didn't expect was for her past life to catch up with her. Or for her new life as a mystery writer to inspire a deadly killer to target her.

Story
Donald Trump's campaign chairman went to jail. So did his personal lawyer. His long-time political consigliere was convicted of serious federal crimes, and his national security advisor pled guilty to others. Career intelligence agents and military officers were alarmed enough by the president's actions that they alerted senior government officials and ignited the impeachment process. Yet despite all this, a years-long inquiry led by special counsel Robert Mueller, and the third impeachment of a president in American history, Donald Trump survived to run for re-election. Why?

This book has a good premise, but the repetition, angst and quantity of sex scenes causes the entire story line to be diluted to the point of non-existence. Every time a character is speaking, we have to rehear all of the angst going on in his mind. Then a bit of the plot, then we have another sex scene. Gay is not all about sex. It is about being with someone who can make you fly outside of the bedroom (or kitchen or living room etc) Just saying . . . . One more thought, Max has to be Maxine or something similar. No man would write that much angst in one volume, or a series the size of a set of encyclopedia for that matter.

Story
Harley Merlin can sense people's emotions, among other things. It's how she snagged her first job pinpointing cheaters at a casino. But she has no clue where she got these freakish powers because she spent her childhood jumping from home to home in the foster system, and her father left her with nothing more than a cryptic note. Then she crosses paths with a terrifyingly real monster. Which is when a mysterious and annoyingly arrogant young warlock named Wade Crowley steps in, introducing her to a hidden world of beasts, magicals, and covens riddled with secrets.

Having read both exceptional series', I couldn't help but notice the common story lines between these two books. I'll be very interested to see future installments of this series. I was actually very pleased that Discovery of Witches comes through in this, it meant that the book series was read.
Don't hesitate to get this book, especially if you like Amanda Ronconi as narrator. She always does a wonderful job. And if you haven't read the All Souls Series by Deborah Harkness, definitely get that and read it. They have even made a TV series about it.

Story
The night after the fourth of July, Layton Carlson, Jr., of Red Wing, Minnesota, finally got lucky. And unlucky.
He’d picked the perfect spot to lose his virginity to his girlfriend, an abandoned farmyard in the middle of cornfields: nice, private, and quiet. The only problem was...something smelled bad - like, really bad. He mentioned it to a county deputy he knew, and when the cop took a look, he found a body stuffed down a cistern. And then another, and another. By the time Lucas Davenport was called in, the police were up to 15 bodies and counting.

Book 24 in the Series is one of the Best!
Reviewed: 05-09-14
Where does Field of Prey rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
In the detective and mystery line (my name for this genre) the Lucas Davenport series by John Sandford in one of the best. Most of the books are very good, and with this one, they are getting even better! The series doesn't disappoint at any level.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Field of Prey?
The last hour of the audio was full of discovery and excitement. Many threads are woven into the body of the book, making it a very interesting "read".
What about Richard Ferrone’s performance did you like?
Richard Ferrone has done the entire 24 books in the Davenport series. He has a wonderful reading voice, and makes the events come to life, adding to the excitement.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No emotional extremes here, unless you count the discontent of what law enforcement is up against when trying to stop the villains. And the miss-direction of the media when it comes to what is really important.
Any additional comments?
One of my favorite aspects of the Lucas Davenport series is the fact that the stories take place for the most part in Minnesota. Being familiar with all of the locations make the stores more real the the outcomes feel closer to home.

Story
To most, they are animals—even when in human form. They are to be collared and kept on the fringes of society, scorned because they are feared, hated for their extraordinary powers. And attorney Kim Fraser has to go right into the heart of their lair. It’s her job to defend those in need. But there’s absolutely nothing defenseless about Liam Morrissey. His soft Irish lilt and feline grace can’t disguise his sheer strength.

A different kind of love story
Reviewed: 06-20-13
Would you listen to Pride Mates again? Why?
I had to start this one three times before I got past the very slow start. But after getting into the initial chapters, I found a good story line. I'd probably listen to it in the future, but am looking forward to the rest of the series now.
What other book might you compare Pride Mates to and why?
Suzanne Wright's series Phoenix Pack is along the same lines as this series. Both are a little light on the character development. Though both are good, light listens.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
Traci might not have been a good first choice for the narrator, but she did fairly well with the story. Needs work on her Irish accent.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The suspense at the end was by far the best in the book.
Any additional comments?
This is not my favorite type of book, but once in a while I need a change. This is definitely a change from the normal novel listen.

Definitely a chic-lit detective novel
Reviewed: 06-03-13
What did you like best about Abby Cooper, Psychic Eye? What did you like least?
This is a very cute, light weight novel written in an inexperienced sort of way. Though enjoyable, it is not something to make one reflect much.
If you are picky about reality in detective novels, you don't want this one. Though the plot and sub-plots are very good, the adherence to reality is not. Police procedures were not researched well, or just not implemented. The police force in the story must be quite inept to leave so many things undone, and searches not completed for later uncovering by the characters of the story.
Would you be willing to try another book from Victoria Laurie? Why or why not?
Yes, if only to see if her writing style matures as the series goes on.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
Improvement is needed, emotion was handled by squeaking the voice, very irritating. I can't help but wonder how well the book would have been with someone like Barbara Rosenblat or similar narrator.
Did Abby Cooper, Psychic Eye inspire you to do anything?
No, not much inspiration between those covers.
Any additional comments?
When writing a novel, it would be advisable to take into consideration how a listener would be affected by a repeated phrase. Every time I knew the line "liar liar pants on fire" was coming up, my teeth would go on edge.

Good Solid Read by a Very Good Narrator
Reviewed: 06-01-13
Where does A Kiss of Fate rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Though not of the high energy variety, this book takes a time in history and wraps it in magic and emotion. Character development is very well done, good since this is the first in a series.
What did you like best about this story?
The linking of all the characters and the telling of their own parts of the story.
What does Davina Porter bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Davina is one of the best narrators. She adds the Scottish feel and makes it work. She also has the ability to soften harsher parts of the story and adds emotion to all the characters.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, but had to do it in two. (-;
Any additional comments?
This book is not one of the more intricately written with many sub-plots, but it is a well done and enjoyable story.

Dan Brown Exceeds all Expectations!
Reviewed: 05-19-13
What made the experience of listening to Inferno the most enjoyable?
The story was fast moving, twists and turns in the plot kept me listening for the next turn. Paul Michael has a voice that is perfectly made for this type of book. An excellent combination to make a memorable experience.
What other book might you compare Inferno to and why?
This book is as good or better than the first two in the series, and shows the excellent writing skills that Dan Brown used in two of his other novels, Deception Point and Digital Fortress. You can never depend on what you expect and never trust anyone, so to speak.
Which scene was your favorite?
The revelations in the last part of the book made me want to go back and start over. I think that is my favorite part because of the "you've got to be kidding" feelings.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Oh yes! I always have a problem putting my iPod down in the evening, but this one (as with all of Dan Brown books) was so long I had to do it in two days.
Any additional comments?
There are a few authors that I wait impatiently for the next book, Dan Brown is one of them. It is like having a holiday when the new one comes out.
