Great story idea
Reviewed: 03-14-25
This book is written in a very personable way. You feel like you're one of Ed's friends and going along for the ride. The concept and premise of the story is so unique I was completely intrigued from the beginning. The theme is about trying to become better versions of ourselves and I think the author did a beautiful job of unfolding and delivering that message. There is a lot of cursing which I do not mind, but I think people who are sensitive to that should know that it's in there.

So Good!!!

I really enjoyed the plot and how the author laid it out. I've been enjoying the Joe Pickett series from the beginning. There were a few books that I didn't enjoy as much because I felt like Joe stepped out of character. One of the aspects of Joe's character that I love is his strong sense of justice and what is right and wrong. He certainly stands by his character in this book. I'm so excited to keep reading and see where his next journey takes him!

Good, but I have issues
Reviewed: 03-01-25
Overall, the book is good. I have critiques and there were definitely things that annoyed me, but I'm still glad I listen to the book. There are so many stories lately that seem like they copy off of each other but this felt like a new idea. I like that the author blended a futuristic society with fantasy and magic. The book is written in a way that it is interesting and the events that happen keep you interested the whole way through. My biggest critique is I feel the characters could have been developed more thoroughly and some characters needed more information. There were a few times throughout the book that I thought I must have accidentally skipped ahead. I felt this way because the scenes seem to jump, and there was one character in particular, Abby Daniels, that seemed to come out of the blue. After finishing the book, I'm still not completely sure where she came from or much about her. The ending is left open as if there will be more books in a series although it is not marketed as a series. The book was good enough that I would listen to a sequel.

This was still a good story even if a bit weird. I thought I had figured it out early but I was wrong which is always fun for me. I just felt it was a few too many twists, but I'd still recommend reading it.

The previous book was a little out there, but this felt like the ones from the beginning that drew me into the series. It had Joe sticking to his strong sense of right and wrong while also showing a flawed character. I really enjoyed this one.

Story
Deep down here by the dark water lived old Gollum, a small slimy creature. I don’t know where he came from, nor who or what he was. He was Gollum—as dark as darkness, except for two big round pale eyes in his thin face. He had a little boat, and he rowed about quite quietly on the lake; for lake it was, wide and deep and deadly cold.

If you haven't read Mort (e) I would recommend listening to that first before this novella. This story provided a view of who Culdesac was before the War With No Name but also how the war changed him. It wraps up nicely and was a very enjoyable read.

Weird but oh so intriguing
Reviewed: 12-22-24
The premise is definitely the weird part, but if you can get into the idea that animals could learn to be more like humans and wall upright then you'll definitely like the rest of the book. what I found so intriguing are the very human themes of love, religion, government and the inner struggles for the different characters. The book made me re-examine some of my "whys" in life and how I fit into the world/society. The end did feel a little rushed and I'm not sure if it was the author's intention to stop where he did. part of me wishes it would have concluded a little nicer but part of me likes that it leaves it up to the reader's imagination on how it will go. I would definitely recommend this book.

This was very well done. The audio quality in the performers were great. Although the story is based on a true story, it is still told in a gripping fashion. The story felt like you're listening to a fictional thriller, which is perhaps why the story is so good. I definitely recommend.
