Sixteen-year-old Glenn Morgan has lived next to the Rift her entire life, and has no idea of what might be on the other side of it. Glenn's only friend, Kevin, insists the fence holds back a world of monsters and witchcraft, but magic isn't for Glenn. She has enough problems with reality: Glenn's mother disappeared when she was six, and soon after, she lost her scientist father to his all-consuming work on his mysterious Project. Glenn buries herself in her studies, and dreams about the day she can escape to the cold isolation of a research station on 813, a planet on the far side of the known universe.

But when her father's work leads to his arrest, he gives Glenn a simple metal bracelet that will send Glenn and Kevin on the run, with only one place to go. The other side of the Rift will bring truths about what really happened to Glenn's mother, and will put them at the center of an age-old struggle between two halves of a divided world.

Meh

It was just ok. I could not get in the the main character and so the whole thing felt flat. The narrator did not help with all the voices sounding the same which is odd cause I have listened to this narrator on other books and liked her.

Captivating

I couldn’t stop listening to the story even though the main character was frustrating due to her closed mind, stubbornness and know it all (I guess regular 16 year old). She did turn around towards the end.
I wish this book was made into a movie. It would be interesting to see all magic come alive.
The narrator was amazing with her changing intonation and giving each character their voice.
Story is captivating and always changing . There is no dull moment in this book

great story. engaging and good to listen to. I enjoyed the story and the narrator was awesome!

Very Entertaining story

I loved the book. The voice in the reading lacked the ability to vary in tone, cadence and quality for me to tell who the characters were when speaking. overall I give it two thumbs up.

My opinion

I personally loved the story, which I haven't read a Jeff Hirsch I haven't loved.The narrator was slow to the pick up but she started to get it to the characters and it turned out well in the end.

Good science fiction

I struggled to finish, and in the end, it was a book I wished I had let go. I really don't think it's the book though. It is sci-fi--but I may not be a fan. 4 hours in, the book went from pleasant sci-fi mystery to a pretty dark storyline. Lots of death, war, blood, witchcraft, torture. Just not a happy book. I personally am into happier books. I don't mind the fiction, but I want happier. In the ending, A happier note, but too little of an offering, too late for me, actually an ominous ending. I'm writing this bc there may be lots of people who enjoy just this kind of book. This one is well written & narration is superb.

Good, but I have issues

Overall, the book is good. I have critiques and there were definitely things that annoyed me, but I'm still glad I listen to the book. There are so many stories lately that seem like they copy off of each other but this felt like a new idea. I like that the author blended a futuristic society with fantasy and magic. The book is written in a way that it is interesting and the events that happen keep you interested the whole way through. My biggest critique is I feel the characters could have been developed more thoroughly and some characters needed more information. There were a few times throughout the book that I thought I must have accidentally skipped ahead. I felt this way because the scenes seem to jump, and there was one character in particular, Abby Daniels, that seemed to come out of the blue. After finishing the book, I'm still not completely sure where she came from or much about her. The ending is left open as if there will be more books in a series although it is not marketed as a series. The book was good enough that I would listen to a sequel.
