I couldn’t finish this. I listened to it for about two hours. The author is writing as though he just discovered awareness for the first time and it’s a brand new idea. He just goes on and on about how he’s a person who has awareness of his thoughts. Not helpful.

Story
As Martha Beck says in her book, “Integrity is the cure for psychological suffering. Period.” In The Way of Integrity, Beck presents a four-stage process that anyone can use to find integrity, and with it, a sense of purpose, emotional healing, and a life free of mental suffering. Much of what plagues us—people pleasing, staying in stale relationships, negative habits—all point to what happens when we are out of touch with what truly makes us feel whole.

Some of this landed for me, some of it missed the mark. I share some of the values of the author, but her mysticism and her endorsement of dropping a good job if it’s not your passion lost me. Listeners should read up on the author externally , decide for yourself if what you learn affects her credibility for you.

Story
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

Just a romance novel

I wanted to like the story. The backstory and plot line were promising, but it’s turns out they are just the infrastructure to support a pathetic, gushing romance.

The narration was excellent. The author wrapped up the story pretty well. For me, this book was imbalanced; way too many losses for the good guys, and too few wins. I also feel that the explanations were too slow in coming.

Story
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

I got sucked in and couldn’t stop listening. I think some of the math/science detail is unnecessary and detracts from the story, but I still enjoyed it very much. Narration was some of the best I’ve ever heard.

Story
It began on New Year’s Eve. The sickness came on suddenly, and spread quickly. The fear spread even faster. Within weeks, everything people counted on began to fail them. The electrical grid sputtered; law and government collapsed - and more than half of the world’s population was decimated. Where there had been order, there was now chaos. And as the power of science and technology receded, magick rose up in its place.

The premise of the story really appealed to me. The writing, however, seemed juvenile and very YA. The narrator was unable to read men’s voices: they all sound like dying old geezers. I couldn’t finish the book.

Story
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

I enjoyed the story enough to finish it. Had to speed it up quite a bit because it was as so slow for the first half. For me it read like a YA book with adult language sprinkled in. Literally like a children’s book made a little darker and a lot longer. Great narration.

Story
As much as we might try to resist, endings happen in every moment—the end of a breath, the end of a day, the end of a relationship, and ultimately the end of life. And accompanying each ending is a beginning, though it may be unclear what the beginning holds. In How We Live Is How We Die, Pema Chödrön shares her wisdom for working with this flow of life—learning to live with ease, joy, and compassion through uncertainty, embracing new beginnings, and ultimately preparing for death with curiosity and openness rather than fear.

Probably good for innocent neurosis
Reviewed: 11-01-22
Pema Chodron is a great author and teacher. Unfortunately everything I’ve read of hers involves working with the mild neurotic anxieties of a privileged person with few serious problems. If your biggest problems are also craving a dessert or envying your neighbors meditation cushion, you might really benefit from her work. If you have a serious medical problem or are facing poverty, or have another very serious problem in life, you might not be able to relate to Pema’s work

The occasion was a big birthday. And it inspired two close friends to get together in Dharamsala for a talk about something very important to them. The friends were His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. The subject was joy. Both winners of the Nobel Prize, both great spiritual masters and moral leaders of our time, they are also known for being among the most infectiously happy people on the planet.
