It was creepy and a good mystery. I like the characters. Van was interesting and they didn’t go with the female cop being easy.

Story
Elizabeth Black is the headmistress of a girls' school in 1830s Victorian London. She is also a well-respected author of stories written both for and about the upper-class ladies of Victorian society. But by night, she writes very different kinds of stories - the Penny Dreadfuls that are all the rage among the working-class men. Under the pseudonym Charles King, Elizabeth has written about dashing heroes fighting supernatural threats, intelligent detectives solving grisly murders, and dangerous outlaws romancing helpless women.

Story
Jason Chercher is not doing well in love or life. Just two weeks after his wife leaves him, he receives a phone call that his estranged mother has passed away, days before Christmas - leaving her home and all her belongings to him. Frankly, he would like to see everything just burned. But curiosity about his past and anxiety about his future fuels him to make the drive from Salt Lake City to her home in Medford, Oregon. Maybe cleaning out her house will be slightly less depressing than spending the holidays alone, watching reruns of Christmas classics.

Deeper than the movie
Reviewed: 03-19-24
The movie was lovely, and sweet and I enjoy it greatly, but the book has a depth that is unexpected. I normally would not have bought at book that was less than 5 hours but I did it in a rush and didn’t notice. I am so glad I didn’t. My mom was not as bad as his but she (we all) dealt with her mental illness. She has been gone for year but I can see how I need to release. I am sure I will listen again

The book itself is a beautiful read, the story line, sad and joyful and just genuinely amazing. The narrative is also perfect. When you have read a book it is sometimes hard to enjoy the audio books because people don’t sound like you think they should. This book is perfect, the people and the voices meld so well (except mark)

Story
Kate Potter used to love Christmas. A few years ago, she would have been wrapping her presents in September and baking mince pies on Halloween, counting down the days and hours to Christmas. But that was before Kate’s husband left for the army and never came home. Now she can hardly stand December at all. Kate can’t deny she’s lonely, yet she doesn’t think she’s ready for romance. She knows that her son, Jack, needs a Christmas to remember - just like Kate needs a miracle to help her finally move forward with her life. So she’s decided she’ll have to make her own miracle.

In the autumn of 1707, old enemies from the Scottish Highlands to the Borderlands are finding common ground as they join to protest the new Union with England. An invasion is imminent as many plot to bring the exiled young Jacobite king back to Scotland to reclaim his throne, and in Edinburgh, the streets are filled with discontent and danger. Queen Anne, seeking to calm the situation, has sent money up from London for Scots who took part eight years earlier in the ill-fated Darien expedition that left Scotland all but bankrupt.

A very non romantic version of the time period
Reviewed: 12-28-23
It was a great book but parts were so sad. I actually quit it for awhile. I am glad a went back to it. It was a deep, well written book. Very deep, but dark in some places. Unfortunately that is how life must have been. I laughed some, cried a lot and swooned a few times. Listened to it twice and bought the kindle version as well. I think I might end up buying all her books in book format also.
