Story
London, 1930. The five greatest women crime writers have banded together to form a secret society with a single goal: to show they are no longer willing to be treated as second class citizens by their male counterparts in the legendary Detection Club. Led by the formidable Dorothy L. Sayers, the group includes Agatha Christie, Ngaio Marsh, Margery Allingham and Baroness Emma Orczy. They call themselves the Queens of Crime. Their plan? Solve an actual murder, that of a young woman found strangled in a park in France.

I bought this book because I really enjoy mystery stories and particularly love Agatha Christie and Dorothy L. Sayers. The story was good and the narration was well done. Listening to this book has inspired me to read a biography of Dorothy Sayers. I have really never known much about her life and am looking forward to learning more.

Story
Entertaining and different, this is an enjoyable study of a flawed yet characterful Prince of Wales seen through the eyes of the women in his life. Edward Vll, who gave his name to the Edwardian Age and died in 1911, was King of England for the final 10 years of his life. He was 59 when at last he came to the throne. Known as Bertie, the eldest son of Victoria and Albert, he was bullied by both his parents.

What if Mary Bennet’s life took a different path from that laid out for her in Pride and Prejudice? What if the frustrated intellectual of the Bennet family, the marginalized middle daughter, the plain girl who takes refuge in her books, eventually found the fulfillment enjoyed by her prettier, more confident sisters? This is the plot of The Other Bennet Sister, a debut novel with exactly the affection and authority to satisfy Austen fans.

A very good Jane Austin update
Reviewed: 12-14-24
I really enjoyed this book. I’ve read several “updates” to Pride and Prejudice and have generally enjoyed the stories although the writing often fell short, being more like a romance novel than Jane Austin. This book was not like that - I felt that the writing was very good. From a story perspective the only criticism I had was the way Charlotte Collins was portrayed. The author made her out to be a very unpleasant person which was never the way Austin portrayed her. Also in this story the relationship between Charlotte and Elizabeth Bennet was written such that their friendship basically ended after Charlotte’s marriage. Actually, in Pride and Prejudice while Lizzy was upset by her marriage and thought that she would never feel the same about Charlotte, by the time of her trip to Hunsford she was very much looking forward to seeing Charlotte again and they resumed their friendship. But in general this was a really good book.

I wasn’t as crazy about the beginning when he was a child but once he started talking about his life and work as an adult it became much more interesting. And I loved the way the chapters alternated between the biographer discussing a certain time in his life and then having the same period discussed by David as a memoir. I’ve read a lot of biographies but have never seen this technique. Highly recommended.

Extremely snarky biography
Reviewed: 06-24-24
I knew that this woman was known for nasty biographies but I thought I would check this one out. She started by saying that everyone is a mixture of good traits and bad and that Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother was no exception. From then until the end of the book she was loathe to say anything positive about her. In the last paragraph she repeated her assertion that everyone is a mix of good and bad and that on the whole Queen Elizabeth’s life was a force for good. But you wouldn’t know it by reading this biography. Unless you really enjoyed reading unremitting nasty comments I would not recommend this.

Story
Cantankerous and vinegar-tongued Grandmama, from Anne Perry's Charlotte and Thomas Pitt series, is the leading character in this Christmas novel, which unfolds in the chilly, windswept Romney Marshes off the English Channel. Grandmama arrives on a holiday visit to the home of Charlotte's parents, where a fellow guest--an outcast from her own family--is subsequently murdered. Like the heroes before her in Anne Perry's Christmas novels, Grandmama is called upon to play the role of amateur detective.

I’ve read a number of the Charlotte Pitt mysteries and enjoyed them. It’s fun to hear more about Grandmama and her back story. It’s hard to swallow that she changed so much but since it was written by Anne Perry I guess it’s now part of the “cannon”.
