Story
An affair: It can rob a couple of their relationship, their happiness, their very identity. And yet this extremely common human experience is so poorly understood. Adultery has existed since marriage was invented, and so, too, the prohibition against it - in fact it has a tenacity that marriage can only envy. Iconic couples' therapist and best-selling author of Mating in Captivity Esther Perel returns with a groundbreaking and provocative look at infidelity, arguing for a more nuanced and less judgmental conversation about our transgressions.

Story
A middle-aged man returns to his childhood home to attend a funeral. He is drawn to the farm at the end of the road, where, when he was seven, he encountered a most remarkable girl, Lettie Hempstock. Forty years earlier, a man committed suicide in a stolen car at this farm at the end of the road. Like a fuse on a firework, his death lit a touchpaper and resonated in unimaginable ways. The darkness was unleashed, something scary and thoroughly incomprehensible to a little boy. And Lettie - magical, comforting, wise beyond her years - promised to protect him, no matter what.

Story
To the forest on the shore of the Kingdom of the Isles, the orphan Pug came to study with the master magician Kulgan. But though his courage won him a place at court and the heart of a lovely princess, he was ill at ease with the normal ways of wizardry. Yet Pug's strange sort of magic would one day change forever the fates of two worlds. For dark beings from another world had opened a rift in the fabric of spacetime to being again the age-old battle between the forces of Order and Chaos.

A true classic of fantasy, perfectly narrated.

I never got to these as a young reader; just reading them now, I'm blown away. The writing is mature and adult, unlike many in the genre, and the narration is absolutely perfect. (Nearly; I kind of wish that all books had a separate narrator for the women. But he does reasonably well with them.)

A staggeringly beautiful book. It is complex, and an ability to accept a blurred understanding of the storyline is an asset.
Crowley's narration feels rushed at first, but give it an hour or two; it ended up feeling perfect to me, and now I doubt if I another could have read it.

Kind of offensive opening
Reviewed: 07-21-19
I read these books as kids, but they're a bit hard to reread - the way the writer handles the children is just over the top fawning sometimes. And the intro is pretty offensive in the way it slams poor and rural people as so much dumber and less cultured than the vaunted children and their PhD parents. It's kind of a paean to the virtues of the intellectual classes.

Story
It all began when the half-able wizard Questor Thews announced that finally he could restore the Court Scribe Abernathy to human form. It was his spell that had turned Abernathy into a Wheaten Terrier - though still able to talk. All went well - until the wizard breathed the magic dust of his spell and suddenly sneezed. Then, where Abernathy had stood, there was only a bottle containing a particularly evil imp. It had been in the collection of Michel Ard Rhi, former King of Landover, now exiled to Earth. Abernathy must now be a part of that collection!

Story
A year had passed since Ben Holiday bought the Magic Kingdom from the wizard Meeks, who had set a series of pitfalls against him. Ben survived, by the aid of three loyal friends: Questor Thews, an ill-trained wizard; Abernathy, a talking dog, the Court Scribe; and the lovely Willow, who sometimes had to be a tree. But Ben had been troubled by dreams of disaster to his former partner, Miles Bennett. Yet when he returned to Earth, Ben found Miles doing splendidly.

Fantastic, grown-up fantasy
Reviewed: 06-22-19
This series manages to be both engaging for an adult, yet light and fun; it is a rare gem. The second book in the series improves on the first. Ben becomes more relatable, and the story moves along even better. The only weaknesses, for me, remain that sometimes you wish Ben would pick up on things a bit quicker; and the narrator's voice for Willow is overly feminine.
