Story
Harry Adams has always loved horror movies, so it’s not a total coincidence that she took the job cleaning house for movie director Javier Castillo. His forbidding graystone Chicago mansion, Bright Horses, is filled from top to bottom with terrifying props and costumes, as well as glittering awards from his career making films that thrilled audiences—until family tragedy and scandal forced him to vanish from the industry.

There is alot of niavety in the writing. It just feels very narrow-minded. I had to give up once it really got into just totally dogging on people who have religious convictions. also, it feels like it is written by someone who either has never had a teenager/been a parent and/or is fantasizing about a child being perfect without any real form of boundaries or discipline because apparently the 14yo in this book is just a perfect angel who never needs to be reprimanded for anything, who never lies about anything or pushes back against their parent in any way. I totally understand people have different experiences/perspectives but I mean.... I am a mom and know lots of moms and teens and this just feels like wishful thinking. not to mention they are in Chicago? It just didn't feel believable to me. there's also alot of clunky explanations or narration going on and some repeated information that was unnecessary. it isn't terrible... just I can't do the whole "religion and people who believe in Jesus are stupid".

Frustrating - but OK
Reviewed: 02-28-24
I absolutely hated the main character for most of this book, and many reviews said something similar. He just did/said things that seemed unbelievable. It made most of this listen frustrating and annoying.
There is a twist at the end that sort of redeems the story a little... but mostly this just kind of annoyed me. It isn't bad writing, but for lack of a better word, it is cringey. I just wanted to smack the dude the whole time, and that almost made me quit reading before the resolution.
This isn't super long, so worth a listen, just be prepared to struggle through to the end.

Not as great as all these reviews make it sound
Reviewed: 03-29-23
The story honestly just had alot of holes... it had the makings of a decent idea, I guess but I feel like the author was just in a rush or something. Too much of it felt thrown together and just not believable.
The narration was OK, but her American accent was not very good. I kept finding myself distracted by her really slow talking during all of the American parts. but it was a good effort I suppose.

Story
Daniel Martin has never forgotten his childhood encounters with Frank Watkins, the man who built his family a summer home out of cardboard and plywood. Frank's gaze was oddly confusing, as if he was attempting to discern the proper way to behave because he didn't know how to respond in a human manner. Since Frank obviously wasn't an alien, young Daniel thought maybe the man was crazy. In the end, Daniel would learn the terrifying truth about Frank Watkins. And as an adult, Daniel is about to discover there are more of them out there.

I have tried several times to enjoy this author and every time I try to read his books I end up just frustrated. The writing isn't bad, but it isn't good either. It just has no depth and leaves no room for the reader to interpret or contemplate anything. so it ends up being really bland and boring. sorry Bentley little... I really really tried to enjoy your writing. I think the thing is, I feel like you COULD write better if you wanted to, but all these books feel like they have no heart.

The Perry family's new house is perfect - except for the weird behavior of the neighbors, and that odd smell coming from a dark corner in the basement. Pity no one warned the family about the house. Now it's too late. Because the darkness at the bottom of the basement stairs is rising.

On an island off the coast of Ireland, guests gather to celebrate two people joining their lives together as one. The groom: handsome and charming, a rising television star. The bride: smart and ambitious, a magazine publisher. It’s a wedding for a magazine or for a celebrity: the designer dress, the remote location, the luxe party favors, the boutique whiskey. The cell phone service may be spotty and the waves may be rough, but every detail has been expertly planned and will be expertly executed.

Since his wife died, Ralph Roberts has been having trouble sleeping. Each night he wakes up a bit earlier until he's barely sleeping at all. During his late-night walks, he observes some strange things going on in Derry, Maine. He sees colored ribbons streaming from people's heads, two strange little men wandering around town after dark, and more. He begins to suspect that these visions are something more than hallucinations brought on by lack of sleep.

This was a decent story-- a book with good bones and decent structure, but it's the details that are painted with far too broad of a brush... I feel like the character development is not really concise. It gives details that really are not that important to the development of the story and excruciatingly predictable. All of the characters are unsurprising. This author has skill and potential for more- but I found myself wanting more from this.
