Really wish Arnold himself could have read the entire book. Other than that, this was fantastic. I already knew how smart he was, but it was still fascinating to listen to his life story.

This review is way, WAY overdue. I actually listened to this book months ago but have been so busy I haven't taken the time to sit down and write it.

As I believe I've already mentioned, this series has been growing on me. And that continues to hold true. I like the variety of subject matter that the author tackles through the stories, but there is one thing that has continually been troublesome to me. Since the audiobook performance issues (namely excessive sinus and mouth noise) I referred to in other reviews don't seem to be as prevalent as they were in the very beginning, that's not the issue I'm referring to. No, what's been getting under my skin is the MC's wife, Maggie. There was a moment in the book where Walter was joking around with his friends and whatever he said wasn't deemed appropriate by Maggie so he was relegated to the couch that night. I found it childish, petty, and downright ugly. Little things like that have happened throughout the various stories and it is turning her into a character I don't care for at all. I know it's perceived as "cute" or "funny" for a woman to treat her supposedly "clueless" or "bumbling" male partner that way but the reality is that it isn't funny at all. Reverse the genders and it's easy to recognize.

I've been listening to this series from book one and I didn't get off to the best start with it, having not felt a real connection to the characters and getting a bit lost with regard to the plot and the various character relationships. However, it has grown on me quite a bit, in large part, I believe, due to Melanie Fraser's performance. She has such a realness to her characterizations of the different people involved that you feel as if you've quite literally been plopped into the middle of 1940s England.

Surprisingly though, imo, this book wasn't as engaging as the previous book was. The series was slowly getting better for me with each installment but this one felt like one of the earlier books, at least with regard to how much I liked the storyline (it felt a little disconnected and the ending was a bit anti-climactic) and the MC. Guy Winter isn't a character I can easily peg. I always feel a bit of distance there with him - he's not someone I can connect to as well as I'd like. And because of his behavior in this book, I'm finding myself feeling more than a little peeved toward him as a character. I hope he doesn't end up misbehaving in the next book like how we're given hints that he might. That would not be cool at all and I'd probably find myself ultimately rooting against him. Which isn't how I want to feel about the MC in a series I've grown to enjoy.

Tackles a complex subject

One thing I've noticed about this series is that the author often chooses complex subject matter to revolve the plot around. Since this series is more of a "cozy" mystery than something super intense or in depth, there isn't going to be the intense sort of examination of the subject matter that might take place in another type of book. But it still does a good job of approaching the material from both "sides" if you will, and believably demonstrating how most people would probably think about such a subject matter.

On the narration side of things, Kuch continues to deliver a decent performance of the characters in this world the author has created. And with the narration issues mentioned earlier seemingly dealt with, it makes the listening experience enjoyable. Recommended.

This book did a good job of clarifying one of the most muddled, confusing, messes of a war that is part of our country's history. I have conflicting feelings about that time period in the U.S. and this war in particular. This helped bring things into a bit of perspective. Don't think it'll really change much about how I feel about the war as a whole but it helped understand things a bit better. Once again, the narrator did a solid job. Recommended for anyone who enjoys history and/or wartime history.

WWII history has always fascinated me. While there was a lot of things in this book that I already knew, I learned a few new interesting bits of trivia. The narrator did a solid job of delivering the information in an engaging way.

Recommended for anyone with an interest in history - especially WWII history.

There wasn't anything overly spectacular about this book but it was a good, concise summary of the whole BitCoin thing. It's helpful for those who are completely clueless (like me) about this system.

I've really grown to enjoy this series quite a bit. The plots aren't super-deep or anything, so I guess this would be best described as a "cozy" mystery. But I like how the author tackles serious issues, despite hiccups along the way. By hiccups, I mean what happened in this book: he often cites a particular author of a book about the pharmaceutical industry but the author in question is a pretty shady character who has served time in jail on, I believe, at least two occasions. For fraud or something. Of course, I agree with the overall message in this book, but I think a better role model could have been chosen. Perhaps at the time of this writing these things weren't known about the author of the book he cites so often.

At any rate, all of that aside, this is still an enjoyable listen. The narrator issues that got under my skin earlier (distracting mouth and sinus noises) seem diminished quite a bit in this version, so that was cool.

Recommended for any fans of "cozy" mysteries.

I listened to this a couple months back but didn't get around to posting a review until just now - sorry about that. :/

Anyway, this was a decent enough mystery. I sorta had it figured out when it was towards the end, so the reveal wasn't a huge surprise, but it did leave me guessing for a good while. The characters are alright, but not too deep or compelling. The narrator did a decent job too, but like the rest of the book it was just ... OK. Not sure this is a series I'll return to.

This was an average mystery/thriller novel. Not horrible, but not earth-shattering either. The characters felt rather blah, and the mystery itself wasn't hard to figure out. I'd deduced who the baddie was early on, so it was rather disappointing to find out I was right. I like to be surprised by twists/turns in a novel - especially if they make sense. But this one was so predictable it kinda took the fun out of the whole thing. Oh well. :/ The narrator did an OK job.
