Using these exact scripts in my day!
Reviewed: 04-23-24
Thank you for writing such a practical book and giving us words to say when our kids need us to say something, but, we’re speechless. What a great tool. I’ll read this again and again. And I have already used the scripts many times, my husband has even copied the exact phrasing without me telling him where I got it from!

Story
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

Story
Do you believe your struggle with anger stems from the wrong behavior you see displayed in your children? The knee-jerk reactions and blowups you're facing are often a result of a bigger set of "triggers". Some of these are external, like a child's disobedience, back talk, or selective hearing, while others are internal, like an overflowing schedule, sleep deprivation, or perhaps your own painful experiences from childhood.

I needed this book! It was so simple, but so profound. I read the chapters that applied to me and should probably read them again each month. I ended up getting the study guide too. I HIGHLY recommend this book if you ever yell at your kids. It doesn’t have to be that way!

It began with a smoke break. James Monsees and Adam Bowen were two ambitious graduate students at Stanford, and in between puffs after class they dreamed of a way to quit smoking. Their solution became the Juul, a sleek, modern device that could vaporize nicotine into a conveniently potent dosage. Time magazine reporter Jamie Ducharme follows Monsees and Bowen as they create Juul and, in the process, go from public health visionaries and Silicon Valley wunderkinds to two of the most controversial businessmen in the country.

Are your thoughts holding you captive? I’ll never be good enough. Other people have better lives than I do. God couldn’t really love me. Jennie Allen knows what it’s like to swirl in a spiral of destructive thoughts, but she also knows we don’t have to stay stuck in toxic thinking patterns. As she discovered in her own life, God built a way for us to escape that downward spiral. Freedom comes when we refuse to be victims to our thoughts and realize we have already been equipped with power from God to fight and win the war for our minds.

This book was a blend of sermony-self-help, which I LOVE, Jesus helping us through our submission. But, some of the book was more memoir-like and general preaching, which was a different feel.

Story
Americans precede anything negative with three nice comments; French, Dutch, Israelis, and Germans get straight to the point; Latin Americans and Asians are steeped in hierarchy; Scandinavians think the best boss is just one of the crowd. It's no surprise that when they try and talk to each other, chaos breaks out. In The Culture Map, INSEAD professor Erin Meyer is your guide through this subtle, sometimes treacherous terrain in which people from starkly different backgrounds are expected to work harmoniously together.

Would probably love a workshop, but, a bit too hashed out for me
Reviewed: 04-03-21
As someone who was just looking for an interesting read, I think the book was just a bit too long with too many examples for me. For someone seeking real help or change, this could be a great resource though! Also, I think I would have loved a 60-90 minute workshop of this material, just not 5 hours of book.
