I'm just really grateful for this book. it's something I can pop on any time I'm feeling uninspired, not good enough, or like my offerings are useless. by the time I listen to a section or two, my perspective has shifted and I'm ready to sit down and celebrate doing something regardless of the result. eventually all those attempts might really add up to something, but even if they don't, at least I got to play.

I read some of the reviews from people who weren't into this book for various reasons - they didn't like how it talked about religion, they didn't like the narration - but if religion is sacred to you, why would you be reading this book? and I didn't find her whiny at all, I found her hilarious, and plenty of it resonated with me as an ex Mormon (although I found myself jealous that she got to drink with her parents... I'll never get that). and honestly I think she is actually pretty even handed about the good and bad about the Catholic church. I also came up appreciate how a poet approaches prose. I'm not really into poetry, but some of her sentences blossomed on front of me like a flower. I'll listen to this when I want to get into a writing mood in the future.

thank you Stephanie for giving a voice to my diagnosis shame and showing me I'm not the only one, and that we CPTSDers can be thoughtful and intelligent, that we're not just irredeemable fuck ups. I also have CPTSD and endometriosis, and I've been writing a book about it. it's about group think and cruelty, research and therapy, about an industry that takes parent's money, promising to fix their kids, but only harms their children more (the troubled teen industry). I want to write about the efficacy of therapy and the science of healing. you wrote the book I wanted to write! our stories are different, of course, so hopefully there's room on the shelf for both of our books.
I've long been familiar with your name from snap judgment and tal, now I'm glad to know more of your story. thanks again.

loved the story, it was great, but what really surprised me was how much I love the narrator. I tend to prefer American accents...I know, I know, that sounds narrow minded, but after having lived in Europe and Asia for most of my adult life, I just miss the sound of home. so when I bought this book and the narrator had an Australian accent, I was a little worried. but a chapter or two in, I was sold! absolutely love how she voiced each character and added so much to their personalities.

and yes, the book was great, I love how Moriarty captured each personality with humor and compassion, and showed how charming and loveable abusers often are when not actively abusing. great story, thoroughly enjoyed it.

thoroughly enjoy this reimagining of Norse mythology. The narrator's voice adds to rather than detracting from the stories. I even found myself somewhat falling in love with Loki, too bad he meets such a bitter end.

this was so good. I don't watch TV so I don't know Trevor's work, but really enjoyed this story.

something that surprised me was that I walked away with a better understanding of petty crime and the ghetto. I've traveled a lot to some sketchy locations and though I haven't been a victim myself, I've heard plenty of stories of other travelers who've been robbed. it's easy to judge the thieves as morally inferior. why do they have to hurt others, particularly the ones who gain your trust first, face to face? but Trevor's story really opened my eyes. if petty theft is the only opportunity to improve your prospects, or feed your children, or even to feed a crippling addiction, and it's justified by saying "white people always have insurance" then any reasonable person would turn to it. I really appreciated this book. it put me into the mind of another person and me his story real to me. this is the gift of good writing.

Ah, the 90s when the only way to figure out if someone could be a new friend was asking, 'what kind of music do you listen to?'
this story nailed it
and the narrator/ voice artist was fantastic! every voice, conversation, expression... she brought so much to the performance. she really made the characters and personalities stand out. I haven't heard another audio book that felt expertly acted instead of just read.

but didn't like it as much as bel canto. bel canto felt more magical.
narrator was decent but didn't love the way she narrated women's dialogue. she made a lot of the women's voices sound silly, or comically feminine, Whereas, her regular speaking voice was pretty nice. But I felt like it made the female characters sound silly.
