Twists and turns
Reviewed: 02-14-25
The second book was actually better than the first. Maybe because I had some background already so the terms and names of people weren’t as overwhelming as the first book. Anyway, it was a good twist on Spren and fun to see people’s powers emerge. Can’t wait to see what book 3 brings.

Story
91 year-old Ira Levinson is kept concious after a car wreck by visions of his late wife, Ruth, who recounts stories of their lifetime together. A few miles away, at a local rodeo, Sophia Danko, a senior at Wake Forest, meets a young cowboy named Luke. Ira and Ruth. Sophia and Luke. Two couples who have little in common. Yet their lives will converge with unexpected poignancy, reminding us all that even the most difficult decisions can yield extraordinary journeys: beyond despair, beyond death, to the farthest reaches of the human heart.

The movie was better

I love The Longest Ride with Scott Eastwood and Britt Robertson! I own the movie and watch it at least twice a year. The relationship between Sophia and Ira was what clinched it for me in the movie. The book doesn’t include that at all. I think that was the hardest part in the book for me to like - Ira reliving his life with Ruth but through memories and delusions while slowly dying in a car accident. The movie got that part right. The book was just a huge disappointment to me after loving the movie so much. I really wanted it to be as amazing. :(

Story
1941. Audrey Coltrane has always wanted to fly. It's why she implored her father to teach her at the little airfield back home in Texas. It’s why she signed up to train military pilots in Hawaii when the war in Europe began. And it’s why she insists she is not interested in any dream-derailing romantic involvements, even with the disarming Lieutenant James Hart, who fast becomes a friend as treasured as the women with whom she flies. Then one fateful day, she gets caught in the air over Pearl Harbor just as the bombs begin to fall, and suddenly, nowhere feels safe.

Amazing! Read this book!

I’m loving all of the books that have come from WWII stories/journals, all of the heroic efforts that added up to ending one maniacal overlord from taking over the world.
Flight Girls is no exception! Audrey’s story of courage and daring made me laugh and cry (sob even) as I felt her heartbreaks and joys, disappointments and successes. She overcame prejudice against her capabilities time and again and even overcame her own assumptions about her future.
I loved this book! Way to go Ms. Salazar!

The Movie was better
Reviewed: 10-04-20
I listened to this with a bit of an expectation having seen the movie multiple times and loving it. Oops! The book didn’t live up to the movie. The characters were ok and I liked them fine just not as much as “real life.“ The challenges weren’t as cool as the movie either which I get. It’s hard to make written fiction come to life sometimes on the big screen so they change it. The overlords were lame too. I’m glad they weren’t a part of the movie. And Tommy...what the heck! Wow. Didn’t see that coming. Yeah. Skip the book and watch the movie imho.

Zero G is an exciting space adventure combining a young preteen, space pirates, and a new friend. I enjoyed the actors’ voices and thought they did a great job! My 11 year old should enjoy listening to this - it has just enough bodily function references.

I tried listening to a different audio version, but when I heard a sample of this one I felt like Tatiana was Katniss. She did an amazing job with this amazing book! The Hunger Games still makes me cry when I read/listen to/watch Katniss volunteer for Prim and sing for Rue; every single time. I love this book!
