Real Narrators are better
Reviewed: 07-11-24
While I love this series and have listened to the other books multiple times, I will NOT be listening to it again. The virtual voice doesn’t really work.while it was better than the original text to voice monotone readers, it still wasn’t able to differentiate between characters. Every voice sounds the same which made it difficult to identify which character you were listening to.

Warning: new narrator

Overall I enjoyed the story but I’m not sure that I will be listening to this book again and if future books are read by this narrator I will probably not get the audio versions.
I understand that there are occasionally circumstances that require a change in narrator for a well established series but it always causes some issues. The previous narrator was so smooth and her reading and voices seemed effortless. That cannot be said for the current reader. Derek’s voice sounds forced; Ian, who is American, sounds British and the narrator pronounces Covington wrong throughout the entire book. Since the Covington library is a main focus in the book it is VERY distracting and drew me out of the story every time she said it. I’m not sure why the narrator was changed but I wish someone who had at least listened to the previous books in the series had been chosen.

Cori Catastrophe. They call me that sometimes, and I hate to admit it, but it isn’t wrong. Things go weird around me. Electronics die, things break, and if something odd happens, I seem to find it. Finding another dead body just made me late to work. Nothing will stop me from getting my degree, getting a job, and getting away from this tiny town - though leaving my best friend will hurt more than anything else. Reality seems determined to make reaching my goals impossible.

I really enjoyed the story and overall the audiobook was good. My only issue was the narrator. She does OK but she mispronounced a few words throughout the book.

Enjoyable as usual but why change narrators?

Would you listen to Mission Impawsible again? Why?
I enjoyed this book and will probably listen to it again because I enjoy the series overall. I love Holly, Oma, Trixie, Twinkletoes and the rest.
What about Elise Arsenault’s performance did you like?
Ms. Arsenault's performance was completely acceptable and after I got my mind around the change in narrator (Jeanie Kanaley narrated books 1-3) I mostly enjoyed the book. I'm not a fan of switching narrators in the middle of an established series; I find it very jarring. When I preordered the book I hadn't realized there was a change but it was the first thing I noticed a few words into the book.

Any additional comments?
I loved this book and this narrator. Unfortunately I HATE the narrator they replaced Kimberly Alexis with in the more recent releases. Audible in it's infinite wisdom will not set up a way for me to get those books out of my "recommendations based on previous ratings". Because I rated the early books so highly they feel that they HAVE to recommend the later books in the series based on those ratings. I've emailed Audible asking for a fix for this and got no response. At this point I don't think there is one book in my recommendations that I haven't already read/purchased someplace else or that I cannot stand the new narrators. So in order to get some new recommendations had to go back and trash a whole bunch of books that I love. This truly sucks and is something I did NOT want to do. I'm blaming this on Audible.

Vampire hunter and zombie animator Anita Blake is an expert at sniffing out the bad from the good. But in The Lunatic Cafe - now in trade paperback for the first time - she's about to learn that nothing is ever as it seems, especially in matters of the not-so-human heart. Dating a werewolf with self-esteem issues is stressing Anita out. Especially when something - or someone - starts taking out the city's shapeshifters.
