Story
John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First he visited his wife's grave. Then he joined the army. The good news is that humanity finally made it into interstellar space. The bad news is that planets fit to live on are scarce—and alien races willing to fight us for them are common. So: we fight. To defend Earth, and to stake our own claim to planetary real estate. Far from Earth, the war has been going on for decades: brutal, bloody, unyielding. Earth itself is a backwater.

I had one job, keeping the super-genius Dr. Calidore alive on the Allan Corporation Voyager Manhattan. The spaceship was run like a pirate vessel, part of a multi-corporation fleet racing to claim an alien asteroid vessel that had just appeared beyond the moon. None of us knew the Chin Corporation Voyager had nuclear-tipped torpedoes and planned to murder the lot of us. Well, no one knew but Calidore, and the little genius decided to skip out on a shuttle and take over the alien asteroid for himself. He screwed up bad, so bad you wouldn’t believe me if I told you what happened. The point ...

Find a Human Friend to ProofListen the AI Output
Reviewed: 05-22-24
The AI narration kept changing volume at some points within the paragraph as if some parts were re-recorded. What was the biggest issue was the dropping of a few words at the end of many of the chapters which made it hard to understand what was going on until the next few sentences of the next chapter.
I do think that the author tried to listen to all of the book before calling this done and then published it for the masses. However it would have been good for the Author to pick some of his fans and let them listen and then give him advice on how to fix this. I would certainly volunteer. AI is not bad but you really need to go over the output with a fine tooth comb.

Story
Though perhaps most famous as a novelist, Philip K. Dick wrote more than 100 short stories over the course of his career, each as mind-bending and genre-defining as his longer works. Philip K. Dick's Electric Dreams collects 10 of the best. In "Autofac," Dick shows us one of the earliest examples (and warnings) in science fiction of self-replicating machines. "Exhibit Piece" and "The Commuter" feature Dick exploring one of his favorite themes: the shifting nature of reality and whether it is even possible to perceive the world as it truly exists.

PKDick's original stories Better than the TV Show
Reviewed: 04-11-24
PK Dick's original stories are better than the TV Show. While it is nice to see the stories on screen and nice to hear how the adapters enjoyed the stories before reworking them into screen plays. Some adapters changed more than others, the ones that were changed the least I enjoyed more... some were changed drastically so not much of the original story remained. However at least one of the adapters stated after saying that not much of the original remained... we kept the "feeling" of the original story (I do not know what that means since "feelings" are only quantifiable to the person). So if we are putting Philip K. Dick's name on it... then keep to the original as much as possible since if you want to do your own thing... then do it but keep his name off of it.
I enjoyed all of the stories in their original form unlike TV Show, which may or may not be coming back. I also liked hearing the adapter and their reasons for changing things.

Great first Book

This is a great first book. While I am Baby Step 7 so many things in this book did not apply to me... it is still a wonderful listen and the snippets of sound and music just make it even nicer experience. The only negative comment that I would make is that George speaks a little fast so I had to adjust the speed slower by 10% in order to make sure I caught every word. However this minor negative does not make this book any less than a five star book.
Good job George and I await the next book :)

I had an English Professor make me write a paper six different times with different topics on Moll Flanders... and told me he hated my topic and that I could redo the paper for a better grade. I still got a C on it after rewriting this again and again... finally turning the last one in at the end of the semester. So I hated this book after this and avoided it for over 20 years until I decided to listen to the Audiobook.
Now coming full circle I think I appreciate it better today than when I was a college student. I wish I could have listened to it back then... I think I would have grasped it better.

This series keeps getting better. I have read/listened to all 20 books and hope for as many as the Author cares to write with these characters. Someone should buy the movie rights or TV rights certainly there are enough stories for a good sci-fi series.
