Story
When NASA sent astronauts to the moon in the 1960s and 1970s the agency excluded women from the corps, arguing that only military test pilots—made up exclusively of men—had the right stuff. It was an era in which women were steered away from jobs in science and deemed unqualified for space flight. Eventually, though, NASA recognized its blunder and opened the application process to a wider array of hopefuls, regardless of race or gender. From a candidate pool of 8,000 six elite women were selected in 1978—Sally Ride, Judy Resnik, Anna Fisher, Kathy Sullivan, Shannon Lucid, and Rhea Seddon.

What a great way to learn more about these historic moments
Reviewed: 02-26-25
Such a great book about the pioneering women of the space program. I was a young girl when this was all happening and I remember watching the Challenger at school. My father had even applied to be the teacher on that flight. I enjoyed learning more about each of the six women first in to space.

Story
The hardscrabble folks of Troublesome Creek have to scrap for everything - everything except books, that is. Thanks to Roosevelt's Kentucky Pack Horse Library Project, Troublesome's got its very own traveling librarian, Cussy Mary Carter. Cussy's not only a book woman, however, she's also the last of her kind, her skin a shade of blue unlike most anyone else. Not everyone is keen on Cussy's family or the Library Project, and a Blue is often blamed for any whiff of trouble.

I have followed Sally for a few years but had no idea about her story. Such heartache but so much strength. I can not wait to be able to share this story with my daughter once she is older. So much to take away from this book. It will make me a better runner but more so a better parent and human. Can not wait for the next book!
