A delightful telling of the relationship between three generations of women
Reviewed: 01-16-24
I was instantly engaged by the narrator, a daughter and granddaughter, with anxiety and a whole hell of a lot on her plate.

As the daughter of a drug dealer, Wavy knows not to trust people, not even her own parents. It's safer to keep her mouth shut and stay out of sight. Struggling to raise her little brother, Donal, eight-year-old Wavy is the only responsible adult around. Obsessed with the constellations, she finds peace in the starry night sky above the fields behind her house until one night her stargazing causes an accident. After witnessing his motorcycle wreck, she forms an unusual friendship with one of her father's thugs, Kellen, a tattooed ex-con with a heart of gold.

Trigger Warning: Child sexual assalt.
Reviewed: 11-06-23
I really struggled with this book. It was well written, and I understand that many people's lives don't fit into a nice cookie-cutter mold of perfection. Too many childhoods are stolen, innocence robbed, love withheld. This book explores that reality, but it also tells a "love story" between an adult man and a young child that becomes sexual when the girl is 13/14. I had to finish the book to see how it ended and I wish I had never started it. There is nothing beautiful about child rape.

Good at first

Interesting enough characters. Engaging in the beginning. I like strong female characters but it felt less effortless and more forced: “We’re women, and that’s the only point, versus telling a good story. By the end it was super cheesy.

Story
Mattie Ross, a 14-year-old girl from Dardanelle, Arkansas, sets out to avenge her Daddy who was shot to death by a no-good outlaw. Mattie convinces one-eyed "Rooster" Cogburn, the meanest U.S. marshal in the land, to ride along with her. In True Grit, we have a true American classic, as young Mattie, as vital as she is innocent, outdickers and outmaneuvers the hard-bitten men of the trail in a legend that will last through the ages.

Great story- not a great listen if you don’t like mouth noises

This was a great story but I almost couldn’t finish it because of the narrator. So many swallowing sounds and loud nose breathing.
