Cold War
Reviewed: 03-28-25
This book wasn't what I assumed this entry would be. That's not a bad thing. The writing was exceedingly immersive and had me captivated the entire time. That being said I was stressed out for the first 10 hours of the story because I am an empathetic reader and the tone of this book has drastically changed from the previous entries. It honestly feels like a cold war. I recommend it, and am looking forward to the next book.

Many years and even more levels have passed since Jake and friends entered Nevermore. With quite a number of floors passed, they turn their attention to the Challenge Dungeons. These Challenge Dungeons offer – as the name suggests – unique challenges and circumstances, and completing them will earn each Nevermore competitor points and multipliers to their existing points. As things unfold, it quickly becomes clear it’s through these dungeons that the true top-scorer of the Nevermore Leaderboards will be found.

This was a good read, but it felt much less substantial than the other books. there are only 2 major events that I consider important to Jake, and the rest was just buying time until the next book. My favorite parts were simply the reactions of the audience.

This was a great way to tie up loose ends after the main series, and it was like seeing old friends again. the only downside is that "The Return of the Prince" ruined one of my TTRPG scenarios, but I'll figure something out.

We’ve come a long way since the days of Wholesome Grandpa streaming. Transitioning from those blissful, quiet nights, Artorian finds himself in a heap of trouble, turmoil, and change. Plus that tiny detail which involves a burning need to Incarnate, while the Heavenly of Copyright chases him with a rolled up newspaper.

I'm conflicted
Reviewed: 12-11-24
I would normally rate this 4 stars, but it gets docked one for the editing issues on ch 14. I have mixed feelings on this series. When I first discovered it, it quickly became one of my favorites. but after book 9 it became hard to continue. It was like the author lost his blueprint after Asgard and no longer knew how to pace a story. Books 10-12 felt forced very often, while books 13-16 felt like filler with important tidbits here and there. Book 17 and onwards placed the series back on track, but the author cannot focus for the life of him and uses referencesas a cruch to replace genuine interactions. This book started with the climax of the last book and ended before it's own climax could resolve itself. I continue this series only because I have invested too much time and energy into it to not know how it ends.

Not my cup of tea.

I have a personal rule. I don't read tragedies. I came here after reading Mark of the Fool, hoping for something with a similar tone. I really wanted to like this series, and I fell in love with most of the characters pretty quick. The whole series reads like one of Baylin's classes that never ends. Don't get me wrong, the author really shines in his ability to create combat situations, and I like those parts of MotF, but here there are no real breaks. The MC and his team are thrown into one terrible situation after another, constantly being pushed to the limits, have no time to really catch their breath, and at this point we've lost the vast majority of characters we started with, and I get the feeling we aren't done losing people yet. At the end of the day I don't think this series is for me, I'll stick with Mark of the Fool.

In Grandpa times, we continue to struggle to find a good place to live, to become a real Cultivator again, and the clock on the Heavenlies is running out. Then there's the whole prospect of the Chains of Chaos completely unraveling at great cost to local reality. I'm going to need yet another pillow for the pile.

Mixed Bag
Reviewed: 07-16-24
The previous book had me feeling good. The start of this one was enjoyable, I liked Artorian and Dawn in modern times, it was fun. I wasn't a fan of the constant notes and messages we were bombarded with. Whole chapters dedicated to inane information that would never be useful or even come up again. I was enjoying the progress that was being made midway through the book, and then it all came to a crawl. The last 2 and a half hours were a real slog to get through. By then whenever a new tangent started I was like "Holy Heavenlies, CAN WE FOCUS!?"

Artorian's stroll onto Earth is cut short by a dagger in the back. Dealing with an unjust loss, he's torn between mourning what was lost and plotting a deviously calculated revenge. An eye for an eye, a stab for a stab. It's time to roll up those sleeves, whip out the master plan, and get down to crafting the narrative.

Saved in the Second Half
Reviewed: 07-14-24
The first few chapters had me excited. it established a focused serious and clear goal and I was ready to have that aspect back since it's been missing the last several books. Then the book nearly lost me when Artorian did everything except focus on the goal for 3 hours. All the Eternium scenes felt like they could have been skipped. Luckily the second half of the book buckled down and gave me enough catharsis to feel like I enjoyed myself. Props to Pirhalla, his performance compared to the last book was excellent, and apparently he's a decent singer.

An excellent story and an exercise of frustration for Lindon. I won't spoil anything, but I'd like to point out that many of the problems in this book could have been solved with a soul oath swearing they were trying to save lives.
