Historia
At the dawn of the 20th century, humanity was facing global disaster. Mass starvation, long predicted for the fast-growing population, was about to become a reality. A call went out to the worlds scientists to find a solution. This is the story of the two enormously gifted, fatally flawed men who found it: the brilliant, self-important Fritz Haber and the reclusive, alcoholic Carl Bosch. Together they discovered a way to make bread out of air, built city-sized factories, controlled world markets, and saved millions of lives.

Great historical telling
Revisado: 03-19-25
I loved learning about the history of something so fundamental to humanity’s growth. I was not a fan of choice for narrator’s style but it wasn’t so distracting that I couldn’t listen. One note on Epilogue is that author didn’t mention that we could feed far more people with much less fertilizer is we used the fertilizer to grow food to feed people instead of animals that then feed people. That would improve our waterways and be more economical.

Historia
Doctor Jack Troy was born and raised in Faha, but his responsibilities for the sick and his care for the dying mean he has always been set apart from the town. His eldest daughter, Ronnie, has grown up in her father’s shadow, and remains there, having missed one chance at love – and passed up another offer of marriage from an unsuitable man. But in the Advent season of 1962, as the town readies itself for Christmas, Ronnie and Doctor Troy’s lives are turned upside down when a baby is left in their care.

I loved the beautiful descriptions of intimate, human, everyday moments as they occur in our minds but I could never say in such a wonderful and often humorous way as this author does.

I love this book — more of what education should be. This approach is more about the enjoyment of sharing knowledge rather than “telling it at you”.

In Shameless, Brian Tyler Cohen lays bare the long con of the modern Republican Party. While the radical right continues hiding behind gaslighting maneuvers, artificial slogans, and hollow catchphrases, Cohen’s unflinching narrative illuminates the realities and dangers of the ever-widening gulf between the vaunted Republican brand and their actual behavior.

Historia
In Dimensions, Dr. Jacques Vallee reexamines the historical record that led to the modern UFO phenomenon and to the belief in alien contact. He then tackles the enigma of abduction reports, which come from various times and various countries, as well as the psychic and spiritual components of the contact experience. In the last portion of the book, he notes the factors that inhibit research into the phenomenon - the triple coverup and political motivations - and concludes that the extraterrestrial theory is simply not strange enough to explain the facts.

Historia
A millennium into the future two advancements have altered the course of human history: the colonization of the galaxy and the creation of the positronic brain. Isaac Asimov's Robot novels chronicle the unlikely partnership between a New York City detective and a humanoid robot who must learn to work together. Like most people left behind on an over-populated Earth, New York City police detective Elijah Baley had little love for either the arrogant Spacers or their robotic companions.

When an experiment to study quantum uncertainty goes spectacularly wrong, physics student Bill Rustad and his friends find that they have accidentally created an inter-dimensional portal. They connect to Outland - an alternate Earth with identical geology, but where humans never evolved. The group races to establish control of the portal before the government, the military, or evildoers can take it away. Then everything changes when the Yellowstone supervolcano erupts in an explosion large enough to destroy civilization and kill half the planet.

One dimensional characters

I wanted to enjoy the book but the complete lack of character depth prevented me. The story had the feel of a playroom where all the toys are still in the packaging and the furniture is covered in plastic.

Now one of my top 20 all time favorite books
Revisado: 03-20-24
Beautifully written (and narrated). Verghese described scenes and character reflections in a way that I had never heard before — so much feeling, passion, and technicality but with a steadiness and control that impressed on my emotions and intellect in a well balanced way.
