SK never disappoints
Reviewed: 09-22-23
I could have done without the Trump references sprinkled through but the pandemic was part of the story - it took place during the time when we were deep in it, so I don’t understand all the reviews bashing that aspect.
That being said, the writing was brilliant, as always and the story was compelling and horrific, without supernatural elements, which is rare for SK. I thoroughly enjoyed it, as should any true SK devotee.

A little sad, but a really good story of a family, with all their flaws. Thoroughly enjoyed.

I listened to all of Catherine Ryan Howard’s books during the pandemic so I was eagerly awaiting the release of this one. But alas, it was only so-so, probably my least favorite.

This was a very different type of story for Stephen King, no horror, no supernatural beings, but it worked. The characters are so richly drawn, as only SK can, so you are drawn in and thoroughly invested. I would venture to say this is among my favorite SK books and I have read just about all.

Bailey, who wants absolutely nothing to do with her new stepmother. I don’t get all the hype

This was just a mediocre novel, with mediocre characters and as such, it was difficult to feel invested in them, or the story.

Story
During Sarah Smarsh’s turbulent childhood in Kansas in the 1980s and 1990s, the forces of cyclical poverty and the country’s changing economic policies solidified her family’s place among the working poor. By telling the story of her life and the lives of the people she loves, Smarsh challenges us to look more closely at the class divide in our country and examine the myths about people thought to be less because they earn less.

Disappointing
Reviewed: 12-06-20
Started this a year ago and lost interest. Tried again recently, determined to see it through. It was a struggle. It was hard to keep all the family members straight as the timeline jumped forward and back with little rhyme or reason. And, though it tells the “story” of a poor farm family in middle America, it’s barely a story at all, just facts and events peppered with political commentary. Just didn’t like it.

Story
Growing up on the Navajo Indian Reservation, David Crow and his siblings idolized their dad. Tall, strong, smart, and brave, the self-taught Cherokee regaled his family with stories of his World War II feats. But as time passed, David discovered the other side of Thurston Crow, the ex-con with his own code of ethics that justified cruelty, violence, lies - even murder. A shrewd con artist with a genius IQ, Thurston intimidated David with beatings to coerce him into doing his criminal bidding. David's mom, too mentally ill to care for her children, couldn't protect him.

Excellent Memoir
Reviewed: 06-16-20
I was hooked from the first few lines. Haunting and powerful, this is a memoir like no other, a story that stays with you. Saying the author came from a “dysfunctional” family seems inadequate - there should be a new word for the childhood and parents he and his siblings endured. Kudos to all of them for overcoming and succeeding!
