Story
In 2011 a series of antigovernment uprisings shook the Middle East and North Africa in what would become known as the Arab Spring. Few could predict that these convulsions, initially hailed in the West as a triumph of democracy, would give way to brutal civil war, the terrors of the Islamic State, and a global refugee crisis. But, as New York Times best-selling author Scott Anderson shows, the seeds of catastrophe had been sown long before. In this gripping account, Anderson examines the myriad complex causes of the region's profound unraveling.

Interesting and educational, but not what I expected

The author does an excellent job of relating the personal of several middle eastern individuals experiences to historical and contemporary conditions in the region. Extrapolating from his writing, I have drawn the conclusion that there is little hope for a lasting peaceful situation for the region!

Story
Famed investigative journalist Eric Schlosser digs deep to uncover secrets about the management of America's nuclear arsenal. A groundbreaking account of accidents, near misses, extraordinary heroism, and technological breakthroughs, Command and Control explores the dilemma that has existed since the dawn of the nuclear age: How do you deploy weapons of mass destruction without being destroyed by them? That question has never been resolved - and Schlosser reveals how the combination of human fallibility and technological complexity still poses a grave risk to mankind.

Interesting, but a number of factual inaccuracies serves to bring the validity of the entire work into question.

A lot of information about a very valid subject. However, the authors emphasis on the sensational aspects of events, leaving the facts that, in spite of many “accidents “ involving nuclear weapons and power plants (Three Mile Island) there has never been a catastrophic (e.g. Chernobyl) event involving US nuclear weapons or materials. The title is misleading as the author devotes only passing attention to the command and control of the US nuclear arsenal in favor of the sensational telling of personal heroism as well as falling into the trap of “what if”!
Interesting book, but there are better treatments of the treatment of nuclear command and control.

Story
A thrilling and revelatory narrative of one of the most epic and consequential periods in 20th century history - the Arab Revolt and the secret “great game” to control the Middle East. Lawrence in Arabia definitively overturns received wisdom on how the modern Middle East was formed. Sweeping in its action, keen in its portraiture, acid in its condemnation of the destruction wrought by European colonial plots, this is a book that brilliantly captures the way in which the folly of the past creates the anguish of the present.

A significant companion to Seven Pillers

Lawrence in Arabia is well researched, written and, for Audible, well read. This book serves to provide the reader/listener with significant background to the events in the Middle East during and immediately after W W I and provides insight into the roots of todays unrest in the region. I would suggest this book to anyone interested in middle eastern politics as a must read along with Seven Pillars.

Story
Although T. E. Lawrence, commonly known as "Lawrence of Arabia’, died in 1935, the story of his life has captured the imagination of succeeding generations. Seven Pillars of Wisdom is a monumental work in which he chronicles his role in leading the Arab Revolt against the Turks during the First World War. A reluctant leader, and wracked by guilt at the duplicity of the British, Lawrence nevertheless threw himself into his role, suffering the blistering desert conditions and masterminding military campaigns which culminated in the triumphant march of the Arabs into Damascus.

Considering the author, and his own weaknesses and failings, this is an epic tale the has set me in motion to learn more about the events during and following the first World Wars: very well read which, considering it’s length and level of detail, kept me totally engaged.

Story
World War II endures in the popular imagination as a heroic struggle between good and evil, with villainous Hitler driving its events. But Hitler was not in power when the conflict erupted in Asia. His armies did not fight in multiple theaters, his empire did not span the Eurasian continent, and he did not inherit any of the spoils of war. That central role belonged to Joseph Stalin. Drawing on ambitious new research in Soviet, European, and US archives, Stalin’s War revolutionizes our understanding of this global conflict by moving its epicenter to the east.

Although the extreme accounting of all aspects of Lend-lease and combat support the conclusions presented in the epilogue, after the first dozen or so, they become superfluous ! The book did cause me to rethink my feelings about Roosevelt and Churchill, however, it only confirmed my beliefs about Stalin, and by extension, Putin and the Russian people in general!
