First published anonymously in 1929 because its language was considered far too frank for the public circulation, The Middle Parts of Fortune was hailed by T.S. Eliot and Ezra Pound, by Lawrence of Arabia and Ernest Hemingway, as an extraordinary novel. Its author was in fact Frederic Manning, an Australian writer who fought in the Battle of the Somme in 1916, and who told his story of men at war from the perspective of an ordinary soldier.

An excellent writing by the man himself. The reader must read between the lines often to grasp the full effect regarding the adventures of this tortured and conflicted hero ravaged by war, conflicting loyalties and loss. Lends great understanding to the making of the modern Middle East.

A true epic.
Initially this book was difficult for me to get involved with but as the story continued I felt as if I were on a camel riding next to Lawrence himself. This daring first hand account of the stirrings of a very complex future captivated me and left me sorrowful by the end of it.

The true middle East
Would you listen to Seven Pillars of Wisdom again? Why?
Absolutely! The story captivated my imagination and I felt like I was stood by the side of Laurence throughout is journey.
Who was your favorite character and why?
T.E. Laurence was the main character and so it's without a doubt that he is the leading character.
What does Roy McMillan bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
The narrator brings this story to life so well it sounded like he himself was Laurance.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The long distances that Laurance endured on camel and the moments of complete isolation bring it home how humans can struggle through and make the most of bad situations, even through these difficult times Laurance still captures the beauty of the Middle East his discription of the surrounding areas and the people he travelled with is like poetry. Nothing is left unsaid and the simple purity in the writting brings you in to his world.
Any additional comments?
For those who would like to get a better understanding of the early times of the Middle East and with a perspective that is non biased this is the book for you. With modern events and with difficulties currently in the region it would be wise for those who make comments with out a factual bases to take a moment to step back into history and get a better idea of the reasons why modern day Islam has come about.

Tremendous story -great performance
I am preparing to visit Jordan and see Petra and Wadi Rum.
This trip has been on my bucket list ever since seeing Lawrence of Arabia as a kid.
The poetically detailed descriptions of the desert contained in Seven Pillars of Wisdom will greatly enhance my tour.
The reading by Roy McMillan was fantastic!
I highly recommend this

rambling
I felt like this book would have been amazing, if the author wouldn't have got to rambling about metaphorical stuff.
I really enjoy world war 1 stories, and especially the history of the middle East. this story was all that, and a bunch of extra so that was unneeded.
I am definitely planning to listen / read books about TE Lawrence. it will be interesting to learn more about him.
