Story
When vampires attack David White's small town, only luck, firepower, and the intervention of an elite government task force saves his life. The aftermath of the attack leaves him in the middle of the world's biggest secret: the existence of government agencies that regulate the supernatural. They insist that David's "luck" is actually a supernatural gift, and he's immediately recruited into ONSET, the most shadowy part of America's thin blue line of police protectors.

Am I mistaken, or did all of the Black characters die or get rejected/left behind in some manner? I need to re-read this book before finalizing my rating.

Story
After two years and seven months biding her time on Anima, her home ark, it is finally time to act, to put what she has discovered in the Book of Faruk to use. Under an assumed identity, Ophelia travels to Babel, a cosmopolitan and thoroughly modern ark that is the jewel of the universe. Will her talent as a reader suffice to avoid being lured into a deadly trap by her ever more fearful adversaries? Will she ever see Thorn, her betrothed, again?

MC blunders through the whole story.
Reviewed: 04-07-21
Writer creates a lush world with interesting abilities and cultural artifacts; however, although the main character literally has the potential to be incredibly powerful (i.e., she has dragon claws and can animate inanimate objects), she NEVER intentionally uses her abilities to solve problems that her powers should have let her readily overcome. She blunders through the whole story.

Story
Jack Shade has a secret, and this hidden part of his past sends him on a journey through time and space and a great number of metaphysical doorways. From the cozy poker table in the 11th-floor apartment of the Hôtel de Rêve Noire to the ethereal Forest of Souls to the faded houses along the Gold River, Jack flows in and out of this world. Even when his own duplicate hires him to kill himself, Jack is mercury in motion. The Fissure King collects the four existing Jack Shades novellas and shows us Jack's final trick - one last story that finally reveals Jack's true nature.

Great story, impulsive MC
Reviewed: 12-28-20
Really liked the author's world building, but the MC seems too impulsive to have lived as long as he has.

Story
Monsters and beasts roamed the earth and were slain by soldiers and adventurers who were, in turn, killed by stronger threats. Heroes and villains created new epics and were forgotten when their successors appeared. This was the way of the Infinite World. Summoned into this chaotic place, a young boy with no name and no past must learn to survive. Bound to a master who doesn't care whether he lives or dies, he must become stronger. The question is: how?

Great story (esp. if you skip Aynward's chapters)!
Reviewed: 07-07-20
I really enjoyed this story and think the author is very skilled and has great promise! My only complaint is that I found the character of Aynward (sp?) superfluous (i.e., I found his character so annoying that I just started skipping his chapters halfway through the book. I don't think I missed anything of note from doing this). I look forward to reading the next book (esp. if the author kills off Aynward)!

Wanted to like it, but didn't
Reviewed: 06-17-20
The premise is based upon the classic "fish out of water" trope, and the story had potential; but the main character is selfish and immature. This really makes it hard to like her. I could only get through half of it (so take my ratings with a handful of salt). Finally, the book could really use a copy editor.

Disappointing
Reviewed: 05-11-20
I loved other books by Slade, but not this one.
The main character is the most incompetent assassin you can imagine. Spoiler: Every time she had an opportunity to kill an enemy, she either failed miserably or she did not have the guts to do it (unless she got lucky and accidentally killed them). Then these enemies come back and the same cycle plays out again. The whole story is a waste of time. I found the character so disappointing that I rooted for her to get killed. Slade is generally a smart and engaging writer, but this story was horrid.
