What is this?

How can this be published? Oh right, it's published by the author, if you can call his/her an author! There is no detail on what crime has been committed, vague idea of a crime and it's supposed to be a mystery? I am disgusted by this.
And virtual voice? What is this new trend of everything being virtual! Do we not have enough narrators?

Psychologist and criminologist Dr. Gretchen White is a specialist in antisocial personality disorders and violent crimes. She’s helped solve enough prominent cases for detective Patrick Shaughnessy that her own history is often overlooked: Gretchen is an admitted sociopath once suspected of killing her aunt. Shaughnessy still thinks Gretchen got away with murder. It’s not going to happen again.

Story
Black Flies is the story of paramedic Ollie Cross and his first year on the job in mid-'90s New York. It is a ground's-eye view of life on the streets: the shoot-outs, the bad cops, the unhinged medics, the hopeless patients, the dark humor in bizarre circumstances, and one medic's struggle to balance his desire to help against his own growing callousness. This story features lives that hang in the balance, including a single job with a misdiagnosed newborn that sends Cross and his partner into a life-changing struggle between good and evil.

More than one hour passed, I don't see anything suspenseful or mysterious about the story. It's alll about the day to day life of a paramedic. Performance is good though.

I am tired of this kind of stories, Abuse, gaslighting, paranoid weak victim and in the end a happy ending book. And it was too long for this kind of subject.
Narrator was good enough.

Story
It was easy for Elizabeth. She married the man she loved, bore him two children and made a home for him which was the envy of their friends. It was harder for Ruth. She married Elizabeth’s son and then found that, somehow, she could never quite measure up. Isolation, deceit and betrayal fill the gaps between the two individual women and between their different worlds. In this complex thriller, Philippa Gregory deploys all her insight into what women want and what women fear, as Ruth confronts the shifting borders of her own sanity.

How is this a mystery or thriller?

For the whole time, it was about relationship between in-laws and little silly stupid bickering, fighting incidents that's daily life events. I don't get how this passed the category of mystery, thriller and suspense. My first book by this author and will be last one.

Story
Five-year-old Sloane McBride couldn’t sleep that night. Her parents were arguing again, their harsh words heating the cool autumn air. Then there was that other sound - the ominous thump before all went quiet. In the morning, her mother was gone. The official story was that she left. Her loving, devoted mother! That hadn’t sat any better at the time than it did when Sloane moved out at 18, anxious to leave her Texas hometown in search of anywhere else. But not even a fresh start working as a model in New York could keep the nightmares at bay. Or her fears that her father is deadly.

Loved the story. it was so intense that I could not even stop to think how outrageous it was getting. People getting killed left and right, a serial cheating husband and the wife is blind eyed about it! But still it was an edge of my seat kind of a book.
The narrator was a whole different story! She was not bad in her performance, just that she was whispering in the beginning of every sentence and screaming at the end. Sometimes, she would scream out loud for the entire paragraph when plot became. exciting. It was a torture on my ears listening through Bluetooth earpiece. It should have been fixed during editing. Was there even an editor?

This has been in my wish list for a long time until last week, when I saw that Audible included this in Plus catalog. I didn't want another minute to start this book.
The previous reviewer, Clarice Marchman-Jones, said everything I felt about this book but phrased it much better than I could. This is a very different style of a book and performance is definitely superb.
I would've just clicked the 4-star button and left it alone. But when I saw there was only one review posted, I had to write something because this book deserves to be read by more than just a few. I appreciated the writing and performance and wanted to recommend to others.
